MT WARNING RE-OPENING CELEBRATION CLIMB! - SUNDAY GROUP 8am QLD

THE FIRST GROUP FOR THIS EVENT FILLED UP WITHIN MINUTES SO I'M GOING TO ADD A SECOND OPTION. THOUGHT I'D PUT IT ON THE SUNDAY, JUST IN CASE THAT SUITS SOME MEMBERS BETTER.

As you may have read in the paper or heard on the grapevine ... Wollumbin Mt Warning is now open again. I thought there'd be a few of you keen to get up to see the view again so here we go ...

(Please Note - If you are planning on climbing Mt Warning at another time over the next couple of months, please check first with the National Parks office in Murwillumbah. Tweed Shire Council will be closing the road at some stage before Christmas to do some resurfacing - I have been told it will take about two weeks and I believe it will be done before the beginning of December but I don't have definite dates as yet for when the access road ... and therefore the mountain ... will be closed again)

WAITING LIST:
Meetup HQ have advised that they've changed the waiting list system. I didn't really know how it worked before and I have no idea how it works now - just be aware that it's apparently doing something different!

ORGANIZER:
Jann (P:[masked]) will be doing the honours. This is Jann's first time hosting one of our hikes ... so please be gentle with her :)

DAYLIGHT SAVING: Unless otherwise noted, all times for Gold Coast Hiking Meetup Group events are QUEENSLAND TIME

RSVPs
Please make sure your RSVP is up to date the night before and text the Organiser on the day if you find you can't make it at the last minute.

THE TRACK:
Summit Track – 4.5kms each way
Time: Estimate 4 to 5 hours for the return trip.
Grade: Strenuous - for experienced hikers ONLY
A well-marked track winds up from the Breakfast Creek parking area to the summit, passing through a variety of vegetation communities – from subtropical and temperate rainforest to wet sclerophyll forest and heath shrubland. A final rock scramble at the top brings you to the summit platform’s 360 degree views which give you the best perspective of the surrounding caldera. For most of the year, the summit is the first place on the Australian mainland to see the sun’s rays each morning. Precautions: Be aware that the temperature drops rapidly as you ascend so wear or take warm clothes with you. Suitable footwear should be worn and we ask that you keep to the marked track to avoid causing erosion or harming the rainforest vegetation.

WHAT TO BRING: Plenty of water (at least 2 litres), sunscreen and insect repellent (I find that Rid seems to keep the leeches at bay!) Members are also asked to bring a first aid kit on every hike.

AFTERWARDS: I can recommend Rainforest Cafe on Mt Warning Road for great food, good coffee and a gorgeous setting where the tables are set out along the creek.

COST: We'll pass around the hat again for a $1 contribution to cover our registration on the Meetup website which is around $170 per year. Any additional funds will be donated to the Springbrook SES.

PERSONAL RESPONSILIBITY PHILOSOPHY: The Gold Coast Hiking Meetup Group is not a registered association or official club - it's really just a group of people walking together. As such, we cannot be held responsible for any accidents or injuries that may happen at or occur as a result of our events. We also cannot provide any guidance on fitness levels required. I always try to include the description from the NPWS websites but basically, it's up to individual members to decide whether they are hale and hearty enough to undertake the walk. We like to call this our 'PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY' philosophy!

What a spectacular view from the top. 15 of us set out at 8.10am with Sharon in front and Steve, Ming and I coming up the rear. It was magic....fun company, great exercise and a wee bit of a challenge at the top. A 45 minute break at the top to take in the magnificent 360 degree scenery. We arrived back at the carpark at 12.00midday. Thanks everyone for making my first 'Hosting' hike so easy. The Rainforest Cafe was great at the end...sitting outdoors by the stream.

I have jumped from the wait list and am happy to give fellow walkers a lift. I live at Burleigh Heads and expect to leave a bit over an hour before the walk starts. So with daylight saving that makes for a early start, like 5.45am!!!!!! I can take 3 people. Call or text me on[masked] to arrange. Cheers John

    October 7, 2013

    • Karen R.

Hi John - Don't panic about that early start. Because we are a Gold Coast-based club, our walk times are in Queensland times. From Burleigh, I'd say a 6.45 departure time will be fine!

Thanks Karen!!!! I did do a double take on the time when I worked it out!!! Thanks for letting me know!! Cheers John

Sorry I have just changed my RSVP from a yes to a no. My sister has just invited me to a Hen's function (on same day as climb) for her upcoming wedding. Everyone have a fabulous day and hopefully now track is open I will get to do it another time soon.

  • Carol J

My plus 2's have piked out on me so I'll step down this time to give 3 others a chance. Have a great time everybody!

  • Brian G.

For everyone doing this walk the track is a credit to the volunteers as I went up today and the cleanup was massive but as Karen said its a challenging walk and garden gloves are a good idea for the chain leg of the climb. It's really a great climb , car pooling will be a good idea as parking is limited and daylight saving will have started so that needs to be considered. I will put it to my group on Saturday to start at 7am so we can get parking. Hope you have a great day
