TANGALOOMA WEEKEND GETAWAY

It's back by popular demand! After such a good time was had by all in 2011 and 2012, Barry Baker is organising another fun Tangalooma Weekend Getaway for March 22-25, 2013.

Accommodation - $130 per person (approximately) for 3 nights
We have booked four waterfront villas adjacent to Tangalooma Resort - all fully self-contained with each villa accommodating six people. Features include open plan living with a deck to view those spectacular sunsets over Moreton Bay. For more information and photos go to www.moretonislandrealestate.com/tangalooma-resort-accommodation.php.

The agents are charging us $600 per villa for the three nights which we have averaged out to approximately $130 per person, including a small food kitty which we hope will cover dinner out on the first night, plus a little left over for miscellaneous items. Please note that this price may change depending on numbers but it won't be by much.

Transport to island via Tangalooma Flier - $80 return
Transfers to the island are provided by the Tangalooma Flier which departs from the wharf at Pinkenba. You will need to book and pay (by credit card) for your own ticket direct with the Tangalooma Flier operators. Phone[masked] 6333. Barry will advise a booking number when he gets it from the operators so don't make your booking until you hear from him.

Getting There - Our suggested Meetup time of 9am on the Friday is based on us catching the 10am ferry. Please note that there is also a 5pm ferry on Friday afternoon or several options on Saturday (7.30am, 10am, 12.30pm or 5pm) if you are not able to get Friday off work.

Getting Home - The main group will probably opt for the 2pm return ferry on Monday afternoon but, again, you are welcome to return on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning if you have work commitments. Ferries depart from Tangalooma at 9am, 2pm, 4pm and 7pm both days.

Important Note - Everyone will need to pay the full three nights' accommodation, even if you only stay one or two nights, as we obviously have to make sure you have a bed!

Car Pooling - $15 each way
Barry will coordinate carpooling from a central Gold Coast location to Pinkenba Wharf. Please contact him if you are interested - [masked]. The cost of $15 each way is to cover petrol and parking at the wharf.

Activities - own expense
There's plenty to see and do on the island ... or you can relax and do nothing at all! For more information on what's available, go to www.tangalooma.com.

Payment -
Full payment for the accommodation ($130) will need to be made by January 31, 2013. Please contact Karen Ransome ([masked]) or Barry Baker ([masked]) for transfer details.  As mentioned above, you'll need to book and pay your ferry transfers direct with the ferry company and carpooling contributions can be made on the day.

Refund Policy -
Due to the fact that our final booking and cost per person will be based on the number of RSVPs, we cannot offer refunds once final monies have been paid.

Further information
If you have any further questions, Barry will be more than happy to answer them for you. You can email him at [masked].

PERSONAL RESPONSILIBITY PHILOSOPHY:
The Gold Coast Hiking Meetup Group is not a registered association or official club - it's really just a group of people walking together. As such, we cannot be held responsible for any accidents or injuries that may happen at or occur as a result of our events. We also cannot provide any guidance on fitness levels required. I always try to include the description from the NPWS websites but basically, it's up to individual members to decide whether they are hale and hearty enough to undertake the walk. We like to call this our 'PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY' philosophy!

We have had a change of room allocations, but that is ok - we will all have a great time!!!!
This year, there are some faces I do not know, so it will be nice to meet you and share this time.
I will email all of you again (and probably put a message on here as well) once I have the details from Tangalooma.
Thank you so much for those who have offered to help me. I really appreciate it.
Let's all make this a wonderful weekend.

    Hi everyone,
I will email all of you individually, but just in case anyone does not read emails often (I know I don't, so probably others the same) I will post here as well.
As of today (Sunday morning) we still do not have the requested quotation from Tangalooma for our first evening together there when we all like to get together as a group, mix and mingle, get to know each other and generally have a good time.
Once we have their quotations in, we will have a clearer picture regarding the funds left from the kitty to use on salads etc.
By now, you would all have received your Villa allocations, so are aware of who you are sharing with, so I am sure it will be easy for you to co-ordinate between everyone in the villa to decide what each of you should bring for other "meals" ie breakfast, snacks, anything else you feel like. If you don't want to do this, there are enough food outlets on the island to buy what you want there (a little more expensive than on the mainland).

    Hi Joyce and everyone else
That sounds like a great idea Joyce.
I'd love a show of hands of those who can help though....I am sure Barry cannot do all the organisation as well as the catering alone.
Moira, thank you for your offer to help by collecting the meat. That is fantastic!
Now, we need some help regarding salads etc. (buying mainly - we can all prepare as needed).
If we are to have as great a time as last year in regard to food and food preparation, we need to all pull together.
I am in contact with Barry, so if anyone cannot contact me, please let him know what you can do/suggestions.
    Thanks

Hi Vi, I can do a green salad one night and a coleslaw salad the next. Joyce

    Hi all,
Need your help with catering please.
I know I was able to handle last year, but this year just cannot do at this time (those who know me, know why).
So please, all the ladies who volunteered to help at the meeting, I would appreciate it if you could put your hands up again.
I have emailed Tangalooma catering but cost looks a bit prohibitive this year, but I am still working on that.
Main area that needs help is buying of the meat (email I sent outlines this) and other needs we may have eg salads.
Please, could I see a show of hands??
    Thanks
    Violet

Hi Vi, Sorry to hear of your mishap. Maybe Barry can buy the steaks, sausage and chicken kebabs. All people to provide their own breakfast, lunch and provide one salad or salad ingredients to make a salad on the day.Keep desert simple...maybe hot cross buns or fruit platter. There are enough salad recipies for green salads, coleslaw, rice and potato salads.

Suggestions re catering this year please.
First year, everyone brought everything except the meat which Barry kindly arranged. We found the villas were disjointed and did not socialise greatly, but this did give people time to themselves which I am sure many enjoyed.
Last year, between Barry and I we arranged to have a sit down meal on the Friday evening together, then each night thereafter we congregated in one of the villas (full to the rafters) and enjoyed a meal together which the ladies mainly from that villa prepared.
It was suggested if we do it again, that each night a different villa can cater for everyone else attending the weekend.
This early in the planning, let us see what we can come up with that will make our time together spectacular!!!
    Suggestions please.

perhaps book the extra villa and put the people who are on the waiting list in first instead of accepting more who are not on the wait list.

    November 29, 2012

  • Karen R.

Re the extra places - we can book an additional villa if necessary but we are trying to make allowances for the fact that some people will drop out before the final payment date.

not sure how this works, yesterday there was 24 attending and 2 on the waitlist. now there is 30 attending and the first 2 on the waitlist are still waiting... there is also only enough room in the accom to fit 24 persons.... Could someone explain please. I do understand the +1 and +3 etc. but all those added to 24....
