Tahoe hiking weekend

7/11/2013 Update

Last chance to confirm your place, if you haven't already!  We have a couple of dorm beds left, pay via Paypal to confirm your spot.

If you are confirmed you should have received an email from me with all the details.  Let me know if you haven't!

This July we'll be doing something a bit different.  We will have a weekend event in Lake Tahoe.  The event will involve two day hikes. A long hike on Saturday and a shorter one on Sunday before returning home. NOTE: These will be strenuous hikes in remote locations, with hot temperatures and high elevations. As with all my hikes everyone signs up at their own risk, be sure to bring appropriate equipment for the conditions.

Saturday Hike - Mount Tallac

Our first hike will be climbing Mount Tallac in Desolation Wilderness.  This is a ten mile round trip (5 miles each way) to the summit of Mount Tallac from Tallac Trailhead.  This will involve a 3000+ foot elevation gain from 6480' to 9735'.   Conditions are likely to be extremely hot with little shade on the climb.  So bring A LOT of water (several pints at least, I am bringing a 3 liter Camelback), a good sun-hat, and sun-screen.   Also bring a packed lunch to have at the summit.  The trailhead is about 45 minutes drive from where we are staying at Kings Beach (see below).  I want to start around 9am, so want to leave the lodge by around 8am.

Sunday Hike - Five Lakes

Our second hike will be a short, less strenuous trip to Five Lakes in Granite Chief Wilderness.    This is a 4 miles round trip (around 2 miles each way) with 900 foot elevation gain.  We will start at the trailhead on Alpine Meadows Road and hike up to the lakes.  You can swim in the lakes (again, at your own risk!) so be sure to bring swimming costume if you fancy a dip.  We will leaving after breakfast, and tidying up the lodge on Sunday morning (no set time, though we'll try and get there before noon) and head straight back to the bay area after the hike.

Accommodation for this event will be at Apres Ski Club in King's Beach on the North Shore of late Tahoe. This is a ski and snowboard club but it is open year round.   It is a really nice lodge, in a great location and they have kitchen facilities, WiFi and a hot tub.  Accommodation will consist of bunks in a dorm room, or beds in a private room (each private "deluxe" room has two beds).  Apres Ski Club members will get a discount, join online here.  Note that the lodge is a club, not a hotel, guests are expected to tidy up the lodge after their visit.

We will arrive at the lodge on Friday evening after traveling up after work, I will driving up from my office in the SF Financial District and have room for three carpoolers.  Arrange carpooling via the comments thread.  If you want to arrive earlier on Friday you will either need to join the club or arrange with me so you can be signed in as Nick's (the Lodge Manager) guest.

I will be cooking dinner at the lodge (for those who want it) on Saturday night.   My current menu plan is cottage pie and bean casserole as the veggie option.  The price of dinner will be extra.  If anyone wants to contribute side dishes and/or dessert to the Saturday meal it will be appreciated.  There is a 24 hour Safeway and several good restaurants nearby for the other meals.

To confirm your place send full payment for the accommodation to my Paypal email ([masked]).  The 20 places on this event will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis, based on when I received payment.  Please include your full name and cell number (and whether you are an Apres Ski Club member) in the paypal comments.  The total price for both nights accommodations are as follows:

Apres Ski Club Member, dorm bed: $46

Apres Ski Club Member, deluxe bed: $57

Non-member, dorm bed: $57

Non-member, deluxe bed: $68

How much is the cost to join you just for the hike Sunday, since I will be about 10 minutes from the Kings Beach at a friend's cabin?

Are there any carpools? I'm nervous my brave little car might not make this trip.

I have a cabin at the base of Mt. Tallac. I will stay there, but would like to join you on the hikes. Would that be ok?

This sounds really fun, but I am a beginner and not sure if this will be a good start. Any thoughts?

If you haven't hiked at altitude before the Saturday hike may be a bit much.

I'm still a bit unclear about my whereabouts @ that point, but would like to go if it's feasible. Do you know when final commitments will need to be made?
