Skyline to Sea Trail - Big Basin Redwood State Park

Directions/meeting point: (the meetup.com directions linked above are not always reliable) the meeting point will be at the Waddell Beach parking lot on Highway One, between Pescadero and Davenport.  I'd recommend using this link to find it.  I will be driving my Silver Subaru Impreza WRX, license plate ending in 468.   I'll be wearing this black Sanzaru Games hoodie. I'll send out my cell to RSVPs (but as always there is no guarantee of reception)

This week's hike (suggested by Natalie) is the Skyline-to-the-Sea trail in Big Basin State park.  We will start at the beginning of Skyline-to-the-Sea trail off Highway One.  We will follow Skyline-to-the-Sea until the McCrary Ridge trail, which we will take as far as the Howard King trail.   Howard King trail will descend down to Berry Creek falls, we will have lunch at the falls before returning along Skyline-to-the-Sea trail.  This is a long, strenuous hike.  It's around 14 miles with pretty serious elevation gain, I'd expect it to take around 7 hours in total.

Bring a headlamp or flashlight in case the end of the trip gets dark. Dress in layers, bring lots of water (2 liters at least), lunch and snacks.  The hike starts a little earlier than usual at 10am, its fairly long hike so try and be there on time. Hopefully the weather will be good, but be prepared for rain and mud.

Carpooling recommended.  If anyone needs a ride, Natalie is driving up from Outer Westside of San Francisco, I'm driving up from NOPA.

If anyone fancies a post-hike beer and a snack, we'll be heading over to Moss Beach Distillery after the hike, who have an awesome patio over looking the pacific (with fire pits and blankets).

I corrected the picture orientation. What chore. WHEW!

Did you know after you click on a particular picture, you can click on it again to see a fuller resolution version? THEN, suddenly your mouse arrow turns into a "+" symbol, which lets you enlarge any part of that bigger picture. Try doing that with our group pic at the falls.

This camera is a few months old, so this is the first real use I got with it. I promise future pictures will get better, stay about the same, or get worse.

I hike last weekend from BigBasin HQ to Wadell Beach.
Though one of the wooden bridge at Skyline to the Sea Trail was washed out, there were enough logs to across the rock, that I had no difficulty to cross the creek. Further the water volume has decreased from the previous weeks and I was careful, but it was easy to cross. Hope this helps!

    April 29, 2012

  • Gareth M.

I hiked this last month. There was one bridge near the start that was out, but there was an easy alternative route that avoided it. All the other bridges were perfectly useable. Which one are you refering to?

    April 28, 2012

  • Don K.

Yes, that is a good description, the platform was a bit insecure/consisting of two pieces over the rocks of the stream. The scary/dangerous portion was more the torrent of the stream beneath. It may be flowing at a lower volume at this point in time...Conversely, it may be repaired at this point in time.

    April 28, 2012

  • Steve

What does "dangerous" mean? Did they put the bridge (the wooden platform) back on, and if so, was it insecure over the rocks of the stream, causing it to shift about, or was the problem something else?

    April 28, 2012

  • Don K.

I was there two weekends ago and was able to traverse the "seasonal bridge" , though I must admit it was a bit scary/dangerous. Then again, I'm willing to chance it a second time......tomorrow!

    April 28, 2012

  • Steve

Guys, there is a big problem with your hike. The "Skyline-to-the-Sea" to the sea trail has a "seasonal bridge" which is down, at least as of 3 weeks ago when I was there. When you get stuck there, you will have no choice but to retrace your original route going in, adding an additional 1200 feet of uphill and several additional miles to your estimated journey.

Is it too late to join a carpool from SF? I love Big Baisin and would enjoy tagging along.

Did they ever solve the mystery of the Big Basin killer?

If we happen to hear strange sounds, I suggest we break up individually to investigate. You go that way. I'll go this way. I've seen them do that in the movies.

This is very last minute..but does anyone have room in their car? I live in Burlingame but can meet you off the 280 at Trousedale or 101 at Broadway dpending on which way you are driving:-)

  • Doug / I.

Ok, people. I'm so gonna hike the hell outta this trail. Bring it.

    Mule? Check.
    Car battery? Check.
    AC converter? Check.
    Dorm 'fridge? Check.
    Microwave oven? Check.
    70" HDTV? Check.

What else did the early pioneers need to cross this great land of ours?

  • Julien C.

Hi everyone, I'm going to carpool with Nathalie to get there but as I have to go back to SF ASAP after the hike, is there anybody who DOES NOT plan to have a few drink after the hike and will go back directly to San Francisco straight at the end of the hike ? If yes, would that person have a room in his car ? Thanks a lot

    April 27, 2012

  • Gareth M.

Obviously kit will depend on the weather, but good hiking boots are essential. This is a long strenuous hike. Lots of layers and a waterproof are always a good idea. As is lots of water, suncream, and lunch.

    April 27, 2012

  • Gareth M.

The trail should be around 7 hours. So we should be back at the starting point at around 5 or so.

    April 27, 2012

  • Doug / I.

"Does anyone have an idea at what time we will be back in SF?"

It's 14 miles. I suspect some of us will NOT make it out alive. Others will need to be carried. There's rumor of a no-host, cannibalism BBQ. It's BYOB...Bring Your Own Body! But don't worry. Everything is under control. I've ALREADY secured the movie rights to this seemingly innocent, little stroll.

    April 23, 2012

Hi Cyrous, Do you still have space in your car? If you are driving through Van Ness in SF, I can be near there...would I be able to catch a ride with you? Will totally pitch in for gas. Thanks.

    April 22, 2012

  • Doug / I.

    Space for 3!

I'm in the Lake Merritt area near the Merritt Bakery. I can also make a pick up at the West Oakland BART station.

Would like to leave around 7:30am.

I plan to stop off at the Moss Beach Distillery after the hike.

You may have to sign a waiver, as I am an Asian driver and we will be traveling down Highway 1.

Is THAT what they mean by "living on the edge"?

    MOSS BEACH DISTILLERY DISCOUNT
Planning to go to the Moss Beach Distillery after the hike? This link turns your $18 into $40. Not a bad ROI.
