Stinson Beach to Cataract Falls

Distance: 13 miles

Elevation Gain: 4000 ft

Duration: 6 hours

Difficult and Strenuous

This is a challenging hike with lots of steps.  First, we will meet at the Stinson Beach Fire Station.  We will start at Matt Davis Trail to Ridge Trail (Coastal Trail).  Then head north west parallel to Ridgecrest Blvd until we reach the Bolinas Fairfax junction.  We will proceed 2 miles down the Bolinas Fairfax Road until we hit the Cataract Trail, where we will take a break at Alpine Lake.  Then we will continue our return down the Cataract Trail to Rock Spring; cut across on Old Mine Trail to the Pantoll Ranger station (restroom stop).  Continue on Steep Ravine to Dipsea TRail and back to the Stinson Beach Fire STation.  This is a long hike, so please give yourselves enough time to finish the hike.  Estimated hike time about 7 hours.  If we leave by 10:30A, we should be finished by around 5:30P.

Make sure to bring plenty of water 2-3 Liters, layered clothing (lots of micro-climates), good shoes (some areas are slippery), enough food, sun block, hiking poles, whatever you need to make your trip safe and fun.  Highly recommend bringing enough snacks.  Our hike will take a ways and time before our lunch destination.

Sorry Dogs are not permitted on the entire trip.  They are only allowed on a small part of the Coastal Trail and along the Cataract trails.  Those who would like to bring their furry friends can meet us at Alpine Lake for lunch.  We should be there around 2P.  You will have to walk them along the Cataract Trail and park your cars at Rock Springs.

If people are interested in hanging out after the hike for food and drink, let us know.  Pelican Inn is a nice spot.  Open to other suggestions.

Meeting Point

Hwy 101 to Hwy 1/Stinson Beach Exit.  Stay on 1 to Stinson Beach or take Panoramic Hwy to Stinson Beach (Ocean views on Hwy 1 & REdwoods on Panoramic).  At Hwy 1, turn left at the sign "Stinson Beach Park."  Meet at the STinson Fire STation.  There is parking at the Stinson parking lot.

Carpool

Those who are interested in carpooling and live on the westside of SF can contact me.  I have 3 seats and first come first serve.  Please be considerate and make sure you will be going before reserving seats, so others who are actually going can reserve a spot.  Gareth will be driving from NOPA, for those who live in his area.

Hope cougars don't like Chinese food, if you know what I mean. Of course, I'm just 3/4 Chinese, so, if you're a picky eater, I'm really California Cuisine.

    @Dan

Paul Brown says "The City" was written by an Englishman that visited Muir Woods. Interestingly, both songs are penned about local outdoor spots. We're more lucky than we realize.

I still like the first nominee, because the words are easier to remember. Nice try, though!

Douglas, Thanks for posting that link. I hadn't heard that song in quite a few years. I have the album somewhere....I remember it has a slice of pie on the cover. All that said, I think I lke this song as a anthem for hikers...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...

If there was a hiking National Anthem, this song would be a nominee...

When did the GG Bridge go up to $6? From where I come from, that's NOT a bridge toll. That's an Admission Price!!!

We were part of the 'lost' group. But we had a great alternate leader in Jimmy. It was one of the toughest hike we did thus far. But all ends well. We had a great time. Our more firm bums

I hope you made it back to Stinson. Lost reception and couldn't really see the map you sent me. Thanks again for your efforts to communicate with us. Vangel you did a great job informing us and Janelle, glad you could make it. Lar, thanks for trying to warn us. Everyone was so flexible. Thanks and I hope I'll see you on another hike. REally bummed I didn't get to see everyone on this hike.

    Hi All,
Sorry about the whole event. Apparently, I picked a VERY popular Sunday. I hope those who were able to reach the site, enjoyed the great weather. Thank you for coming and those for leading the members who braved it through the crazy traffic. I'm really happy you made it. This event has been a huge and valuable learning experience. Couple of things I would have done differently: changed the starting point or in this case met you midway on the Matt Davis Trail.

Hope you all have a great time hiking. I got lost more than two hours, paid twice for the toll free, but still could not find you guys. I am so sad, and disappointed.....could anyone give me a ride next time?

    June 10, 2012

  • Jen

This was supposed to be my first hike with you guys but after sitting on traffic for near 30 minutes and then hunting for parking I kinda lost my steam. Hopefully another time. Hope it was a nice day.

WAIT A SEC! What's going on here?! What other offer can be better than a 7 hour, 13 mile, 4,000 ft elevation climb hike?

I would like to join a carpool from SF. If you're coming from the south and driving through on 101 I could also meet up anywhere along the way. thanks!

    June 9, 2012

  • Jimmy

@Jason Do you still need a ride? We can meet at Fry's off Hamilton.

    June 8, 2012

  • Natalie

fYI-I have 2 free spots in my car now. Let me know if you still need a ride from westside of SF.

    June 8, 2012

  • Natalie

Awesome! Whew! Thanks Jen. Got some misinfo. Thank goodness. We don't want to start that early on a Saturday! :) See you all tomorrow.

    June 8, 2012

  • Doug / I.

DRATS! Looks like I'll be going on this hike, afterall.

    June 8, 2012

  • Jen

Race starts at 8:30am, a point to point from Mill Valley to Stinson and it's 7.4 miles. Which means (1) most cars will be parked at Mill Valley, not Stinson and (2) by 10:30am most if not all are done (last year's last place finisher completed it in 1:53:xx. So I think parking will be okay. :-)

    June 8, 2012

  • Doug / I.

Natalie, if I don't find a good parking space, I'm going back home, because I don't like walking that far from the car to the hiking point.

    June 8, 2012

  • Natalie

Hi Everyone. Glad to see people are carpooling. Just found out there will be a race along Stinson beach that same morning. Yikes! I recommend getting there a little early for parking. Those who are driving solo, try and find a carpool buddy in our group. Hope to see you all there.

    Hi Denise,

Currently, my car is full. I'll put you on the waitlist. I would check with another member and see if someone else might have space in their car. Best.

    Hi Natalie,
Do you still have spots open in your car? I am in SF near 19th and Noriega. Is that near you? If so, I'd like to carpool.

Hi Martha. I will be coming from Alameda. In what city do you live?

    May 17, 2012

Does anyone want to carpool. I live in east bay, can help with gas.

    May 17, 2012

  • Natalie

Truly beautiful hike. We will see much of the westside of Mt Tam. Lots of waterfalls, wildflowers, and birds. I can't promise clear views of the coast, but even in the fog it's refreshing and scenic to see it resting through the trees. Please bring lots of water, at least 2L. There will be different elevation gains. Hope to see you on the trail.

    May 14, 2012

  • Karen

Natalie - Realizing this is too strenuous for me and Shadow, but thanks for looking into it.

    May 7, 2012

  • Doug / I.

    Uh, oh. (gulp)

4,000 elevation climb?! Hopefully that just means going up and down 2 feet X 2,000.

    How's your foot Natalie?

    May 5, 2012

  • Natalie

Karen-So far, it looks like the trail is dog friendly. It is 13mi and I'll post more info once I've checked out the trail.

    May 4, 2012

  • Doug / I.

Cataract Falls? Is that located near Bifocal Bend?

    May 4, 2012

  • Karen

Is this a dog-friendly hike? I know Cataract Falls is, but don't know if the route is. Thanks-
