Muir woods hike

NOTE changed meeting point: We now meet at the Muir Beach parking lot.

Directions/meeting point: (the meetup.com directions linked above are not always reliable) the meeting point will be at the entrance to Muir Beach parking lot.   I'd recommend using this link to find our meeting point.  There is a large parking lot at Muir Beach which I don't *think* has a fee (though I am unable to confirm online).  I will be driving my Silver Subaru Impreza WRX, license plate ending in 468.   I'll be wearing this black Sanzaru Games hoodie. I'll send out my cell to RSVPs (but as always there is no guarantee of reception)

This week we'll be hiking to Muir Woods via the Southern side of Mount Tam. We'll take the Redwood Creek Trail from Muir Beach then cut across to the Coastal View trail up the side of Mount Tam, before returning through Muir Woods via the Ben Johnson trail back to Redwood Creek Trail.

It should be around 8-10 miles or so with steep elevation gain in places, and (if the weather holds out) amazing views of Mount Tam and the Muir Woods redwoods.  Hopefully the weather will be good, but be prepared for rain and mud.

If anyone wants to carpool, I'll be driving up from the Alamo Square district of San Francisco.

This is a state park, so dogs are not allowed unfortunately.  If anyone fancies a post-hike beer and snack, I'll be heading to the Pelican Inn in Muir Beach after the hike.

After taking my 3 advils, I realized that I left the Pelican Inn without paying for my Fish and Chips! Who do I owe or am I now in the dog house at the Pelican Inn? How to describe yesterday? Awesome, and great to meet so many good humored and adaptable people! Can't wait to do it again :) Joy

The group that went on to Pantoll subdivided, with most taking the Coastal trail back and a few heading down the canyon towards Muir Woods. I can only vouch for the Coastal group, but we made it back in glorious late afternoon sunshine!

  • Joy Bowen G.

Oh and just curious... Did the last group ever get back?

Hi Garath, this sounds like a great hike! What is the drive to Muir Beach like? Will there be steep climbing on winding road?

    January 12, 2013

    January 11, 2013

Hi Vlad and Martha, I'm down to drive your car too and I'm in lower Fillmore, near USF. Otherwise, I'll chip in for gas or whatever is needed![masked]

      January 12, 2013

    • Vlad V.

So Martha and I are carpooling tomorrow for sure now. We've got at least one more spot from SF (church and market area or on the way from church and market to muir woods.) Car is a Toyota Rav-4. Call me if you need a ride up.

    January 11, 2013

Hello all friendly hikers. I live at church and market. I'd like to carpool with someone if possible. I love to drive though I don't have a car. If we get 4/5 people together we can split a zipcar. Let me know if you have a spot in your car (i can meet anywhere on the SF subway line) or if you want a ride and are willing to split a zipcar for 20 bucks. Cheers :)

Vlad, u know how to drive a stick?

    January 9, 2013

    • Vlad V.

Does it have a clutch too or do I just have to shift gears? Kidding!!! Yep, the last car I owned was a stick - how fun - this makes me happy. You're leaving from SF?

      January 9, 2013

  • Martha

Adrienne, would u mine driving, I'm nervous driving long distances, I can help half of gas.

    January 8, 2013

    • Adrienne

I have the same problem with driving long distances when I've never been there. Maybe we should just try and carpool with someone.

      January 8, 2013

    • Vlad V.

I volunteer to drive if you have a car - see post above.

I would love a ride from SF and can meet anywhere near public transportation! I can pay gas/tolls. Would love to come! Thanks

    November 25, 2012

    • Elena B.

      Sure

      November 29, 2012

    • Elena B.

Forgive me b/c I know I was your driver for all of you in this covetsation, but I may just pass on this hike because of the upcoming weather and we have no leader. Wish to meet up with you all sometime soon and to mention, i'd be happy to be the driver for the next one that comes along. Aloha

      November 30, 2012

  • Patrick H.

I was wondering. It would seem that even though our fearless leader Gareth has been letting everyone know he cannot lead the hike on Sunday that everyone is still planning on going. It should be interesting to see if this 60+ strong group will just appear at the trail head and start hiking as a guide less organism.

    November 29, 2012

  • Gareth M.

If anyone wants to take over leading this hike, let me know. Otherwise I am afraid I will have to postpone.

    November 28, 2012

  • carol

Hi everyone, I just signed up. If anyone has spot in their car, I am coming from Rockridge Bart, but can meet at any Bart station to carpool. thx!

    November 27, 2012

  • Gareth M.

I anyone if familiar with this area and is interesting in leading this hike, email me. Otherwise I will have have to cancel I am afraid.

    November 27, 2012

    • Gareth M.

You don't need to know the exact route as long as you familiar with the area, it is easy follow (and you don't have to go along the exact route I laid out). I you are interested hosting, email me and I will talk you through the details.

      November 27, 2012

  • Michael S.

what about if someone was to do some research the trail so that all the 60+ people can enjoy the hike?

    November 27, 2012

  • Kim

I live in Pacifica and plan on driving. Will be going down 19th Ave to head to Golden Gate Bridge. Anyone want to carpool? Also I have a National Parks pass....

    November 26, 2012

  • Michael S.

how would i go about joining a carpool?

    November 23, 2012

Looks like the hike is off for tomorrow. :( Let's try again in December guys!

    November 16, 2012

  • Mayumi

Should I bring an umbrella or raincoat ?

    November 16, 2012

  • Mayumi

If it rains, is it still happening?

    November 16, 2012

    • Gareth M.

I will still be going if it rains (though may do shorter route)

      November 16, 2012

  • Marty

I live in San Mateo. Would be glad to drive/carpool with other mid-peninsula or south bay hikes.

    November 16, 2012

    • Marty

Definitely. Do you want to drive or me? And if you, is there someplace safe I can park my car?

      November 16, 2012

    • Elena B.

Great. This will be my first time coming to this meetup, but I am sure there will be a fine place to park the car. You may drive if you prefere? I am really fine either way.

      November 16, 2012

  • Scott W.

I have space for 2 more. My group will be meeting outside of Starbucks @ 19th and Irving. Call me if interested in joining my carpool,[masked]

    November 14, 2012

    • Scott W.

I have 1 more space available in my carpool, for a total of 5 people in my car. The fifth person will need to pay for their admission to Muir Woods as my pass is only good for a group of four.

So far I have Carolyn, Jashua and Murali (awaiting confirmation).

      November 15, 2012

    • Scott W.

Alright guys my car is officially full. I've got 5 total, with Catherine as my fourth and final passenger.

      November 15, 2012

  • Rita

    Anyone carpooling from Sonoma County?

    November 14, 2012

    • Jennifer T.

I'm in Santa Rosa and would like to carpool !

      November 14, 2012

    • Rita

Ok! I am willing to drive but have never been to Muir Woods. I see the closed signs to the park as I drive by so I need ideas about how early to leave.
