100-Mile Endurance Challenge Training #1

Background:
In the run up to the 100-Mile Endurance Challenge ( http://100ec.org) on October 22-23, 2011 we will be hold training runs along the actual (new) course.  In all, we plan to run eight (8) 25-mile segments over the next two months. You don't have to sign up for the race in order to participate.  All runners (that is, all runners who, for some reason, want to run 25 miles) can come.

Details:
This time, we will be running the first segment from:

100 Mile Club
507 South Vicentia Avenue
Corona, CA 92882

to:

Denny's
3000 W. Chapman Ave.
Orange, CA 92868
Contact: Alex
(714)[masked]

RSVP:
All RSVPs are handled through meetup.com.  This event is free.  But, you must signup with meetup.com (pretty easy).

Full Schedule:
Mark your calendar for these upcoming runs.  These dates are tentative.  We will schedule more runs as these dates get closer.

Aug 13 (Sat) - 7am - Segment 1
Aug 20 (Sat) - 7am - Segment 2
Aug 27 (Sat) - 7am - Segment 3
Sep 3 (Sat) - 7am - Segment 4

The rest of the runs are in real-time (you know, like Jack Bauer!), approx. when we will be running them on the day/night of the event (notice the start times below).  Yes, 3am!

Sep 24 (Sat) - 8:30am - Segment 1
Sep 25 (Sun) - 2:30pm - Segment 2
Sep 30 (Fri) - 9pm - Segment 3
Oct 2 (Sun) - 3am - Segment 4

Notes:

  • We ask that runners target a 13-15 minute/mile pace (roughly 6 hours). If you don't think you can manage this pace, we would ask that you start the course early so that you finish at about 1:00pm.
  • We will need at least two volunteers to meet runners at the end point at 6:30am and transport them to the start by 7am.  We will need one additional volunteer to drive the first set of volunteers back to their car when we are done.  If you don't want to run, you can still volunteer to meet the runners in the middle of the course.  Depending on where you live, volunteering could actually be to your benefit.  If you want to volunteer, please mention this when you sign up or send me an email.  I will send out emails to the runners if I don't get enough volunteers.
  • There will be water along the way.  But, you will need a water backpack or two hand-held water bottles.  Bring a hat and sunscreen.  We may have help, but assume these runs are self-supported.  So bring food, cash and moleskin (for blisters) as well.
  • We have limited the number of runners to 12.  Therefore, please RSVP (don't just show up).  If you have signed up and can't make it, please cancel. You can do this through meetup.com or just send me an email (even if it's 5 minutes before we start running... I will be checking my email from my phone). Otherwise, we will be waiting around for you to arrive.
  • All RSVPs are handled through meetup.com.  This event is free.  But, you must signup with meetup.com (pretty easy).
  • These dates are tentative.  We will schedule more runs as these dates get closer.
  • If you are from out of town or can't make these events, please consider running something like this in order to build confidence and endurance.  Our goal is for everyone to finish!

3000 is correct. Im not sure we are going to support. But if we did, the second car wash would be my recommendation.

I've see 3000 & 300 W. Chapman in comments, so please confirm for my gps. And I'd suggest as a pit stop we use either car wash for a check in point, either early one when we go up Gypsum onto La Palma, or later car wash also on La Palma right before Imperial as we cross the trail on the wooden bridge to the other side of the water. At least support cars can reach us, and restrooms & refreshments are available both places.

  • Mieko

Oh nooo ONLY 23 miles??? ;) haha....good I am just getting over with my cold. See you tomorrow .

    August 12, 2011

  • Darren

By the way, the route tomorrow is only 23 miles. There's not too many places to stage a check-in station (aid station) along the river trail after this point. So, we settled on Denny's - at least for now. Other segments will be longer.

  • Darren

Bjorn - I have a flowchart. I will send it to you! :-)

    August 11, 2011

  • Darren

Mieko. Please meet us at 300 W. Chapman/Denny's at 6:30am. Everyone who is driving to Corona, should be there by 7:00am. Sorry but the detailed map on the website has not be updated. Denny's is a new addition. I will update the 100ec.org website so that it matches the aid stations in training runs 1 - 4 soon. The addresses on meetup.com are the most up-to-date at the moment. We could see small changes to the route after we run it since this route is new for this year's run.

  • Mieko

sorry, Darren, one more question... 300 W. Chapman/Denny's is not same as on the websit race course point B ... Is Danny's is actually 25 mile aidstation at the race or point B as show on the website...

    August 11, 2011

  • Bjorn

Darren, can you please provide a flowchart or a spreadsheet ;-)

    August 11, 2011

  • Mieko

oh... so I meet at Denny's and I don't have to drive anyone to Corona?? I will be at Denny's and I am flexible if I need to drive people to Corona, just let me know ... One more question... are we meeting at Denny's 7am or Corona 7am??

    August 11, 2011

  • Darren

Hi Annelise - thanks for the offer and flexibility. Right now, I'm assuming that the plan I outlined above is still in force. Sean - I'm assuming you will be driving to Corona as well. Mieko - I'm assuming that you will be meeting me at Denny's. So, you won't need a ride back to Corona.

Using a Garmin for the 100ec on Oct 22-23 is required. I'm hoping to get real-world confirmation that this approach is practical during the training runs. You can find instructions for downloading the 100ec route to your Garmin watch here: http://100ec.org/docs/Download..... There is also a cue sheet. Please print this before Saturday and bring it with you. Let me know if you have any questions or have problems. Thx

    August 9, 2011

  • Mieko

hmmm... who can take me back to Corona?? after the run??

    August 9, 2011

  • Darren

    Here's the plan:
    1. Darren will meet Linda, Sol and Mieko at Denny?s.
    2. Jerry, Bjorn, Annelise, Tom and Sally will be driving directly to the start in Corona.
    3. Using the car that Linda dropped off, Jerry will drive Bjorn, Annelise, Tom and Sally back to Corona.
    4. Linda and I will be turning around and running back to the start (50 miles).

    August 9, 2011

  • SOLOMON S.

Darren, I can meet you, but if I meet at Denny's, does that give me the flexibility to finish later by walking the whole 25 miles? Congratulations to Annelise for winning the T-shirt slogan contest at nduranc.com with, "If I collapse, please stop my Garmin."

    August 9, 2011

  • Mieko

If someone taking me back to my car at Corona after the run, I can meet you at Denny's for carpool.
