When foster children don't get reunifited with their birth family or adopted by another family, turning 18 can be very scary. They don't have a family or outside resources to fall back on. "GDS" can help make their transition to adulthood special by providing one of our young adults with a "First Apartment Starter Kit" to help them tackle the responsibilities of independent adulthood! Head to the dollar store to stock up on: cleaning supplies, dishtowels, soap, an alarm clock, laundry basket, linens, pots and pans, a calendar/planner, etc. Deliver the items anytime, or to the youth at their graduation from our Independent Living Skills Program! Here is a link to their suggestion donation wish list. Look under Independant Living/Family Supplies: http://www.familywiseservices.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Wishlist-2012.pdf
Please note that outside of cribs/crib bedding, all donated items should be new. If you have a used item you wish to donate, please send me a private message (PM) thru the group telling me what is the item and I'll run it by the organization to see if they will accept it. If you want to participate but can't make this date/time, please PM me and we can arrange a meetup to get your items to me and I'll bring them to FamilyWise.
A little more detail on this event: Taylor @ FamilyWise asks that we bring items for the starter kits as one big donation and they will put together the kits based on individuals needs. They are normally open only during the week but are opening special for us @ 3pm on 5/18. Taylor will give us a short tour of the facility and talk about the other programs and volunteer opportunities.
