First of all, I hope you do not mind that I am contacting you via your meet up group. I am looking for very specific volunteers, who want to work on humanitarian issues, and I found your group. I thought I would make a volunteer opportunity known to you, and if any of you are interested, please let me know.
My name is Sara Thomson and I am an intern at Friends of the World Food Program. We are a nonprofit, based in Washington D.C. that support the work of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP.) By the end of 2009, WFP hopes to provide life-saving assistance to nearly 100 million people in about 80 countries. Friends of WFP works to build support for WFP in the U.S. We do this through fundraising, advocacy and awareness raising about the issue of global hunger and WFP.
In January 2008, the Outreach Department launched a grassroots volunteer program: the WFP Committee program. Our goal is find local volunteers, with an interest in international affairs, who want to serve as volunteer leaders in their community on the issue of global hunger. This is why I am reaching out to all of you, as we are currently trying to recruit volunteers in your area! I encourage you to check our website for more about who we are and what we do (www.friendsofwfp.org) and in particular please look at our information on becoming a WFP Committee Leader. January 11, we will start our next two-month training session starting. We also have open conference calls scheduled for next week, so you can learn more about this opportunity. If any of you might be interested in getting involved with the WFP Committee program, please let me know.
Thank you for taking the time to read my message. Best of luck in all your future volunteering endeavors!
If you would like to get in touch with me, I can be reached at [address removed] or 202.530.1694.
I hope to hear from you soon!
