First Meetup- Getting the Ball Rolling

Hello,

Sorry I've not been in touch properly, but I have had trouble finding a suitable location. I have managed to book a room at The Victoria Hotel so we won't be disturbed, but out of all the days, Tuesday was the one day I couldn't book!

So I've had to change it to Wednesday, and I'm sorry if that means people can't make it, but I really hope those of you who can will still come along.

There have been some great, positive comments about the group already and I would like to welcome each and every one of you to Good Reads in Leeds. It takes time for these things to get off the ground but I'm determined to stick with it and I hope you will too.

I know there is some difference of thought with regards to 'do we have a set text to read or should we just come and discuss literature in general' - there are no hard and fast rules on this but I know from a group I attended in Manchester that having a set text DOES work well. But the whole group's discussion would not have to revolve around the one text for the whole time of the meet; there's plenty of time for discussion on a whole manner of literature-related subjects and when everyone pitches in it can be a really dynamic meet.

So I really hope you can make it, and I'll be in touch nearer the time just to confirm everything for sure. If anyone would like me to meet them outside the pub I'm more than happy; it can be daunting to walk into a meetup for the first time but I would like to make everyone feel individually welcome.

Sorry for the waffle, and I look forward to getting this group started. I appreciate an open forum with whatever feedback you feel necessary, and will do my best to accomodate everyone.

See you soon, fellow bibliophiles :)

Steph

How does everyone feel about this place? I don't know it but I've been having a look online at suitable places...

Hi Steph, I'd vote for the Victoria - a bit scruffy, yes, but has character. Veritas would be ok. Not too sure about Radisson - it is quite nice but essentially would be sitting in an extension of the hotel lobby - and it's quite expensive

Victoria Hotel sounds a good choice, it has quite a lot of seating and when I've been early evening seems relatively quiet [Although I've just realised I'm not going to be able to come on Tuesday due to family visitors but am looking forward to future meetings]

    Hi Valerie,

I'm still not sure yet, but I don't know if the cafe would be open at that time on a Tuesday night? Was hoping for something central-Leeds... if that's OK with everyone. Will be really good to see you there, wherever 'there' is... :)

I will definitely be in touch this week with a venue. I'm in Manchester this weekend with family, and will take a look after I'm home.

      it's extremely difficult to book

don't think you need to book - it's big enough to accommodate a small group of people. as we grow then it may be more tricky

I'd wish you all the best with this group, having joined, and might even come on Tuesday if a venue has been agreed. An extension to my social circle always welcome and bookreaders are so often good company! If the plan is for a group where everyone has to read a set book for every meeting then cool - its not my group, so I'm not about to make counter sugestions as a newbie - but I'll probably take a back seat. I've got a load of books on my reading list and I don't tend to read books because I'm 'told to'.

    Hi!
Could I suggest The Radisson Hotel at The Light? Central, and no noise pollution.

Could I suggest that we have one "non-traditional" book-group reading each time? For example, a poetry collection, an essay/article? I just find the discussion on straight fiction can sometimes be light if the book is fairly straighfowards.. or focuses on a few simple ideas; whilst a poetry collection or a piece of philsosophy or an article often has lots of different ideas which can be discussed. Also, can we set up a couple of short reads for the 9th? Maybe take an online poll with a free polling website?

This sounds good, although I think it would work better if it was hand in hand with a fiction book too... is this what you mean? So having two on the go at once? We would meet once a month so I think that would be time enough to read more than one piece of literature, and discuss both at the meetup?

Yes, I mean two at once.

We started a group in Harrogate. After a few meetings we realised that nobody wanted to read the books even after agreement. So we changed the format so that people would just turn up and tell each other about what they had been reading, bringing them to show the group and swap books etc. They also enjoyed some parts of books read to them. Having a set book seemed to freak everyone out!

Hello, thanks for your suggestion; I've seen it work well with fiction, however, having one book to read gets people (including myself) back into the habit of reading and also provokes a theme of discussion, rather than letting the group become a book-swap thing, when I know there already is a group for that in Leeds. I think the first meet would be a good place to get everyone's views on this, and go from there.

    Hi Steph

I agree with you I can only really do a central location around Woodhouse is really no good for me as I dont drive and it would involve me getting two buses to there

    Hi Steph.

Look foward to the first meet of this group. Have you had any thoughts about a venue yet?

It's not a pub but I thought that LS6 cafe in hyde park might be suitable.

LS6 has an upstairs area which can be booked, im not sure if its free or not though.

The packhorse on woodhouse lane has an upstairs room which is free to book, it has a door and there's a reasonably-priced bar downstairs.
