The Alluring Ms. Allende...

Hello,

Sorry this is late, but I have been trying to get hold of the White Cloth Gallery to book again. They've told me the 16th is out, as that's the day they're doing the switchover for the new exhibition. So I have provisionally booked the 9th July, which is a Tuesday.

If there are any changes I will let you know immediately.

Anyway!!

This month's book is a collection of short stories, entitled The Stories of Eva Luna. Is it by a South American author called Isabel Allende. Apologies in advance to all Kindle users as I don't think it's available in e-reader format.

The link to the book on Amazon is here:

See you all next time!

Steph

I've not managed to get this book because I am still finishing Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. I highly recommend this book, it is compelling and topical reading. I am trying to avoid Evil multinats like Amazon, does anyone have any alternative ideas on ways to get or jointly buy or share books?

Hi Ivan, not to worry, there will be plenty of other times! Yes, we discuss the book chosen at the previous meet. We meet once a month, and alternate between a Tuesday and a Wednesday. Check the site this Wednesday for a new book for July :)

I can't make your next meeting, but at the risk of being cheeky (a fault I was born with I'm afraid) may I mention a fun book evening happening at York Waterstones on Wednesday July 10 from 6.45 to 8.15. The three Mystery Makers - me, Rebecca Jenkins, and Dolores Gordon-Smith - will be talking about mystery, history and murder, and (inevitably!) our books. There'll be a glass of Pimms for everyone, a chance to chat to other book enthusiasts, AND a chance to win a free bag of books. More information at www.mysterymakers.co.uk. It would be great to meet you there if you can make it.

The next book sounds good - I'm determined to make the next meeting (unfortunately family and thesis writing have scuppered me so far). Looking forward to meeting you all and discussing the book

If you're reading the book you should comment on this site even if you cannot attend the meeting. It's a book of disconnected short stories. I started at the beginning. Start at the end and comment. I may never get there. First story is brilliant. Isabel's language is so rich and evocative, laced with imagination and lots of sex.

Anyway......(NTS: don't try and post stuff on iPhone...)

You can start a book of short stories with the last story or the middle story or whatever.

Don't think I'll be able to make it which is such a shame - but I've ordered the book anyway so will be with you in spirit!

I've got it out of the library. Seems like plenty of time to read it.
I may have to leave early.

Had a call from White Cloth- we're good to go for the 9th!

So it's four weeks rather than five this time, but the book isn't as long.

    See you then :)

I think you are right - I couldn't get it on the kindle but it is nice to have it as a 'real' book :)

I agree, I couldn't get it as an audiobook either but it's nice to have a book to hold!
