Here's the comment I posted on orlandosentinel.com. ?I fear the growing ignorance in the U.S. and what it means for the quality of life here and worldwide. ?Makes the movie Idiocracy seem all too frighteningly possible. ?Pam Dodd

If we're going to teach our children how to think clearly, we need to be sure they understand the different ways the word "theory" is used.

Theory in science means a testable mathematical or logical explanation based on carefully studied facts. These explanations are always open to further study. They can never be proven 100% but they can always be falsified, using the same unbiased scientific methods.

Mr. Hutcheson's definition of theory is the more common meaning of conjecture, opinion, or speculation. This kind of theory is not based on carefully studied facts.

Evolution and creationism aren't the same kinds of theories. Several famous court cases, the latest in 2005 in Dover, PA, have found that creationism/Intelligent Design is not science.

Therefore, logically, you can't debate the two issues. Creationism is something you either believe or don't believe. Evolution is something you either accept or don't accept.?

Take another well-known scientific theory, gravity. We don't argue about whether or not we believe in it. Even if you for some strange reason thought gravity didn't exist, you and everything that wasn't nailed down still wouldn't fly up in the air. Like gravity, evolution still works whether or not you accept it. Many actively-practicing Christian scientists will tell you the same thing.

Dear Members,

The following link is an Orlando Sentinel article published yesterday by a Longwood, Florida financial planner. I know we have many talented writers in our group so I ask you to tear this article apart and send your rebuttal etc. to the paper.
