I am deeply troubled...

Last night I was out with friends, including one friend I have not seen for several months. She told me she was in Kenya on a mission. See my friend works for Campus Crusade for Christ, in a division responsible for teaching sex education to countries like Kenya. I thought this was very interesting, as I used to work for Cintar a few years ago. (Cintar is a drama troupe teaching sex education to public schools) I proceeded to say that "teaching sex education and distributing condoms, etc was very noble...etc". She cut me off in mid sentence and got very flustered. "NO" she said, "We do not pass out condoms!, we only teach abstinence." I replied, "But many areas over there are over-populated, and worse, they have STD's [AIDS, Syphilis, etc...]spreading like wild fire." I then could not believe her response! She told me that "Condoms only work half the time, and abstinence is the only way to help them." What!, these people are human, like her, I and the rest of us! We are hard wired to have sex! And we will continue to have sex no matter how much "abstinence" is preached. I wouldn't mind it if they did both. I'm fine with teaching abstinence as long as you give the people "correct and truthful" information. And for "gods sake" give them some tools [condoms] to protect themselves! If condoms only worked "half" the time, then every other time someone have "protected" sex, it could result in a pregnancy or infection. This is utterly ridiculous! Usually if a condom didn't work, it was because it wasn't used properly, if at all. I believe this is a prime example of religious views causing extreme harm to people. I'm sure the missionaries mean well, but I am disgusted at this, a I wish to protest. The Kenyans' (and others) need our help. It is a disgrace and disservice to have these missionaries representing America.
