Response to Randy Tod: Re: [atheists-36] Recovering From Religion? Give Yourself Time

Randy Tod, I hear your factual frustration!  Although I would hestitate to say 95% are religious.  I think the percentage may be far less.  Many people consider themselves "spiritual" now rather than religious -- which is a step or two away from blind dogma belief.  The joy of nature & of life does have an origin of feeling our "spirit" rise within us -- our feeling of recognition of beauty or the pleasure that comes from the senses being activated by for ex. the smell of rain, the wind in my face, the glistening of rain drops on flowers -- any number of things that give pleasure in life.  Eating healthy, wholesome food is also pleasurable.  Music, dancing -- anything in which pleasure outweighs the immediate or long-term pain that might come from it [distinguishing here between healthy pleasure & unhealthy pleasure. . .drugs (legal & illegal) can give some immediate pleasure (refined, white sugar is also a drug); however, have long-term painful consequences, such as the epidemic of childhood & adult on-set diabetes primarily caused by too much white sugar consumption.

"Live, Love & Laugh" . . . Healthily. . . education as to what is healthy is necessary.  Each person each time must weigh the costs & benefits of immediate pleasure & long-term consequences.  Some pleasure can enhance long-term pleasure.  Other pleasure can detract from long-term pleasure or even shorten life-years themselves.

Be "ruthlessly" & educatedly as honest with yourself as you know how to be.  Be conscious of your choices & Why you're making them.  Remind yourself that there are ALWAYS choices.

Try not to analyze yourself too much (I have a challenge with this) -- & get out of your head & into your body.  Strive for a BALANCE among head (reason), heart-spirit (feelings) & body (our physical vehicles in the world).  Use all of your faculties & avenues of communication to discern the worth of information from the outside to your insides. . . and "tune into" the inside honestly & deeply for clues on how to deal with the outside world.

I agree with you, Randy Tod, that if the non-religious way is so much better, "Why aren’t armies of people showing up at our doors demanding to be part of making the world a better, realer place?"  My best answer off the top of my head now is that brainwashing, programming, family scripts & habit are all very powerful in keeping people repeating the worn-out "tapes of the past."  So--one has to do what is right for oneself -- without waiting for others to join you.  Make YOUR life as good as you can make it -- Question what is & what was -- & do what is best for you NOW.  And seek out people who also want what you want -- who can mutually support you in your quest for "sanity in an insane world."

I’m fine with replacing fairy tales with heaven on earth, but I don’t see that happening.  What is the number of religious people in this country—95%?  How many people attend church each week (I don’t know, but it’s a lot).  Are we to pull people kicking and screaming to Love of Life?  Reality is the most beautiful idea I know, but many live in fantasy land.  Why aren’t armies of people showing up at our doors demanding to be part of making the world a better, realer place?

Try replacing it with fear-guilt-&-shame-free Innocent LIFE and Nature and Love in its deepest, broadest & most idealistic sense.  "Enjoy The Moment" & feel Alive IN it!  "Heaven" can be HERE on EARTH!

I keep wondering what we can replace religion with.  If you take away something rewarding, you have to replace it with something equally rewarding.
