I’m a little confused.  Aren’t we all secular humanists?  Don’t understand what the fight is about!

I read this with both sadness and also a touch of whimsy.

Here we are, non believers in the midst of a schism!

Both humanists and atheists have no religion to be defended but as human beings will do we still manage to look on the other guy (or gal) with distain unless they believe EXACTLY what we do.

I personally think there are two seperate issues here. The first is a common issue by both atheists and humanists that there is no big daddy in the sky of any sort. Up to that point we all agree. The differences come in on how we respond to believers. Humanists advocate a gentle intellectual approach with reason as the guide and rationality as the only defense. Educate, reason and wait for the other person to realize they were wrong is the approach offered.

Atheists used to feel that way too until they saw our government being subverted by religious zealots and they took a more militant path of action; hence the schism.

I REALLY wish the believers were rational and intellectually curious enough for the humanist approach to work but I am reluctantly siding these days with the more militant stance.

I think that in the end this is not about what we each stand for but more what we each WILL stand for, in terms of seeing our society carreen in the direction of theocracy.

In the end schisms between non believers are at once sad and counterproductive!

This seperation should be reconsidered.

At this point I am not advocating a response one way or the other but here is a link to the HFA’s response to the petition.

I will say this thou... It is sad how the large Atheist  and Humanists organizations in the state appear to tearing themselves apart in such a public manor. I doubt this will hope achieve our interests.

Very interesting.. Tnx for sharing, Steve. I read the full petition (extremely well written, btw), plus the signee statements. This humanist vs. anti-theist issue has been a major concern of mine in general. I have found that many who identify themselves as humanist exhibit more anti-theist behavior/thinking than humanist behavior/thinking. I tend to disassociate myself from these people, or at least minimize my interaction. People of course have the right to behave as they wish, but others (myself included) also have the right to choose to not associate with them – as this petition demonstrates. Just another example of the challenge of being human. Tnx, again.
