Re: Questioning of the rationale for Circuses & Zoos: Circus protests in Orlando and Kissimmee

Dear Fellow Humans,

This organization (arff--Animal Rights Organization of Central Florida) and others like it in the network of animal rights organizations -- have helped to "raise my consciousness" about things I have long taken for granted about animals & their relationships to humans.

Because of "arff" (& others), I no longer think/feel that it is appropriate/moral/ethical to have animals participate as virtual slaves in either circuses or zoos (or other contexts as well).  WE are animals -- & they are part of Our Family.  You don't abuse members of your family--and WE are One World Family!  We have no right to abuse them for our entertainment.

The only defense I can see for zoos is if the animal is endangered & keeping them in a zoo is the only way to preserve & increase the species before releasement into the wild or a protected habitat.  The cruelty we humans do to animals comes back in negative ways to ourselves as part of the roots of cruelty from humans to humans.  (As a child, I read Black Beauty, the classic book about a horse abused by humans.  I was sickened in heart & spirit & deeply affected.  It formed values & attitudes that are part of the foundation for writing this appeal to you all.

(Eating meat is another Huge part of that downwardly-spiral "circle of cruelty" . . . but that's another story for a different communication.)

It's "high time" that humans stop thinking of ourselves as the "top of the 'totem pole' with the "God(?)"-given right to have "dominion"/power over to do as they please with their human or animal creature cousins.  Other animals have their own purposes here on this earth & the right to live out their own lives as their genetics have programmed them to do.  They have their own consciousnesses and deserve to be FREE! to grow & evolve too, just as humans wish to do in their own processes.

"WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!"  -- And that Includes the other animals besides OURSELVES.

Please examine with an open mind & heart your own consciousness & question, as I did, what I'd been taught all my life & accepted as "normal" and O. K.

Thank you.

Norma J. Young

Piccadilly Circus protests
The Piccadilly Circus is a small circus that is currently traveling with ponies, a couple llamas, one zebra, one tiger and Judy, an Asian elephant (pictured below). ARFF filmed Judy before a performance in Fort Lauderdale earlier this week. Click here to watch the video. The swaying that you see in the video began shortly after Judy was chained by one foot to a stake in the ground. Repetitive behaviors, such as swaying back and forth, or trunk swinging, are often found in elephants confined in the circus. These abnormal behaviors are believed to be a reaction to boredom or stress.
Life in the circus is inherently cruel for animals, who suffer from constant travel, abusive training, and social isolation. In the circus, virtually all of animal’s natural behaviors are thwarted.
Please join our protests!
