What I just wrote (spontaneously) as MY Reasons when I signed the Petition below:   Campaign to remove Phyllis Schlafly as a Groundbreaker on makers.com website and documentary film to be released Feb. 26, 2013

I want Phyllis Schlafly OFF the makers.com website Because:

1) Phyllis Schlafly is anti-human rights; anti-woman's rights; is ignorant of her Own Identity as a Woman--is living back in the Dark Ages; and is an embarrassment to Me as a Woman.  [I met her in the early '70's when she came to speak at the  religious college campus of the fundamentalist protestant Seventh-Day Adventist church I grew up in that had brainwashed me to accept 2nd-class citizenship as a woman because "The Bible" required it.  I found her & her book (Fascinating Womanhood) to be disgusting, demeaning & anti-Personhood to women, encouraging them to be childish, manipulative & dishonest in getting what they wanted in the world at large & from men in particular.]  I concluded that she too was under the "cloak of ignorance" of religious brainwashing/religious abuse.]

2)  She has set the cause of Women's Equality BACK in time & should not be HONORED! by an educational organization--especially Public Television! which I generally greatly admire & watch a lot -- anymore than Hitler should be lauded as a "change maker."  Yes; He & she made "change" -- but caused DESTRUCTIVE, BACKWARD change!

3)  Therefore; for these reasons--and more--I want her name OFF the makers.com website.  It's an INSULT to half of the human race -- WOMEN!

Friends:

This afternoon I will be interviewed for a segment on Sarasota Community Radio Station WSLR  about my campaign to (1) remove Phyllis Schlafly as a Groundbreaker for women’s rights on the website, www.makers.com and in the accompanying documentary film to be released on Feb. 26, 2013, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the publication of Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique  (Betty would be spinning in her grave about this.) and (2) include at least one of the nine surviving NOW founders as a Groundbreaker on the website and in the film. (After I started this campaign, the filmmakers offered to include me but I refused to be involved as long as Phyllis Schlafly was included as a Groundbreaker.

As I’m sure you know, Schlafly has opposed every advance for women’s rights for many decades and continues to do so. She is credited by some with being responsible for the failure of the ERA to be ratified.  Most recently, she endorsed the infamous Todd Akin for reelection. (fortunately, her endorsement had no effect.  He lost.)

By letter of Oct. 10, 2012, US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whom I know, one of the legitimate Groundbreakers on makers.com, wrote that she was totally in agreement with me about the above two goals.

During the interview, I will be asked what people can do to support this campaign.  I made a list for myself and thought I’d send it to you in case you’d like to be a part of this campaign.

Things to do

Sign the petition prepared by Talia Weisberg, with my assistance, at www.tinyurl.com/schlaflypetition

Send the petition to your friends, family, organizations you’re connected to for signature and you and they should put it on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks

Write to:  Betsy West, Dyllan McGee--filmmakers at makers.com

Write to CEOs of PBS, WETA, AOL, and Makers.com – I have their names and contact information if you want it

Write to legitimate Makers on makers.com website and let them know Phyllis Schlafly is included as a Groundbreaker with them

Call or write your local PBS station

Thanks for your consideration.

Happy Thanksgiving!
