Norma,

No, I did not see "inside job", nor is it on my list to do.  Isn't the fact that it won an Oscar proof that it is considered a "nice job of making a film", not a judgement on how completely factual the account is?  I'll admit this shows my limited knowledge of the Oscars...maybe it's different for documentaries and they are subjected to peer review by authorities in the area of the content and voted as being the most accurate on a subject that is under-reported.  If that's the case then color me "surprised"....but it's still not a subject appropriate to the group.  I may or may not have any different "actual knowledge" on the subject and cannot fathom the reason I should: it is not relevant.  It's like christians saying I don't know enough about the bible to be an atheist...that I didn't pray hard enough and open my mind up to let god's (Thor's, Loki's) light shine on me.....it completely misses the point.

I would argue that Jack's posting of a video of Neil Degrasse Tyson is completely relevant.  As you pointed out, he is a skeptic and free thinker and has lectured and debated on atheist views.  He teaches HOW to think rationally and skeptically, not simply WHAT to think.  He supports education and learning as a way to combat poor thought processes.  I would go so far as to say that if Jack posted a link to Neil doing a lecture on flower arranging or a lecture by Richard Dawkins on the tastiest crayons for pre-schoolers, it would be on topic.  These people are our advocates/our voices/our champions.

Now, to the subject of "knowing" and your postings.  Have you read them?  Really read them?  From an outsider's objective view?  Do you understand where they came from and what they are intended to do?  These missives you forward are usually from political action groups.  They are written by professional writers that are tasked with creating a "call to action", not a "call to evaluate all of the information on the subject and come to a rational conclusion".  These are not intended for scrutiny, they are intended to get you to react.  I'm not talking about a conspiracy theory, this is their job.  If they didn't have people that could spur reaction on a few details without encouraging thought and discourse... they would be failing to do what they are paid to do.  Look at the postings objectively and you can see the sausage being made.  It is just as easy to find the opposing view with just as many facts pointing to the opposite conclusion, with as many SENTENCES IN CAPS!!! and useless hyperbole.

Do not, in any case, think that these calls to action are any more relevant to this group despite how professionally...and politically motivated...they are.

Respectfully,

Death Pooky

Did you see the Oscar-winning documentary "Inside Job?" which discusses the very issues - and their causes -- that the posting I shared did?  There's a LOT of "actual knowledge" (to quote your complaint about my post) in that documentary -- or it wouldn't have won the Oscar that year.  BTW, if you have any DIFFERENT "actual knowledge" on the subject, why don't you Share it with us--enlighten us!

Re:  The posting by Jack linking up the interview with the scientist discussing a possible future meteor disaster:  As much as I love science too--And Jon Stewart--And Neil DeGrasse Tyson -- watch him on PBS frequently -- & thought the dinosaur cartoon cute & "on topic" to the posting -- I raise the Question:

Q.:  Is a Possible meteor disaster in the distant future any MORE important or "on topic" than the Current Economic/Housing Disaster STILL WITH us that has not YET been fully DEALT WITH in bringing to accountability the perpetrators of this national & global Disaster?

I voted for Obama -- AND I also want him to deal with the Financial Criminals who brought this "ECONOMIC 'METEOR'" to us.  This economic "meteor" affects us Right NOW -- as human beings (AND as humanists) trying to function with our basics SO THAT we can HAVE the foundation -- basic home security & jobs -- IN ORDER TO deal with the Religious Craziness that threatens us even more REAL-ly & imminently than a meteor.  Let's deal with FIRST THINGS FIRST! . . .Or ALL AT ONCE with each topic of concern to humans-- past, present & future -- having its proper due & respect.  Let's be Multi -- not Linear.  We don't have Time to be Linear only.

Wow, I searched twice to try to find something here that was on topic for the group, or even useful... no luck. I've tried to give the benefit of the doubt and not simply create an ignore rule.  Please help prove my decision right.  You're better than this pablum-rich, simplified, easily digestible trolling "news" snippet meant to get everyone in an uproar without providing any actual knowledge.

Norma --

The most amazing thing just happened.

The Obama Administration finally admitted the truth of what we’ve been saying all along: giant Wall Street banks have become too big to prosecute. In testimony on Wed, March 6, US Attorney General Eric Holder – the nation’s top cop – said,
“I am concerned that the size of some of these institutions becomes so large that it does become difficult for us to prosecute them … I think that is a function of the fact that some of these institutions have become too large."[1]

Exactly. Tell Pres. Obama to repudiate the Administration's policy of treating Wall Street banks as too big to fail and too big to jail by taking immediate steps to break up the big banks and prosecute the criminals who used them to destroy our economy.

Now we understand why the Obama Administration has failed to bring criminal charges against a single major Wall Street bank or executive for systemic fraud that brought down our economy. When the Attorney General openly admits that the most powerful members of society won't be prosecuted for even the most egregious of crimes, we are in deep trouble as a nation.

Remember that we gave Wall Street bankers $700 billion in TARP bailouts and $2.5 trillion in investments, loans, and guarantees to shore up their business (and outrageous bonuses) [2] on the theory that letting them collapse would create a generation-long Depression. In return it seems fair to demand accountability for the actions that brought us to that point. Now it turns out the Administration never had any intention of seeking accountability.

That’s why we’re demanding an immediate end to this unconscionable policy that puts the wishes of Wall Street 1%ers above the well-being of working families, most especially those hardest hit by the criminal actions of these very same people.

Stand up and add you voice with us in demanding the Administration end the policy of “too big to fail/jail” and take immediate steps to break up the big banks and prosecute the criminals who used them to destroy our economy.

As you know, we’ve been pushing hard during the first hundred days of President Obama’s second term for real accountability for the Wall Street criminals who stole our homes, savings, and pensions and destroyed our economy. We think this is the only way he’ll secure his legacy as a champion of justice for the millions of homeowners, taxpayers and retirees harmed by Wall Street criminals. This revelation makes this all the more urgent.

Stand up and demand Pres. Obama take immediate steps to break up the big banks and prosecute the criminals who used them to destroy our economy.

It’s break up time. Now or never.

In solidarity,
