This is a thorny issue.  Are Medicare/Medicaid payments really 
government funding?  How about Workers Comp payments where the 
patient/employee is employed by a government entity?

I would argue (and I work in medical billing so I do have some knowledge 
of these matters) these are payments for services rendered and not 
'funding'.   These government payments are not subsidizing the hospital 
- if anything, the reverse is true.

To get back to the original question many of our hospitals are named for 
saints and/or religious denominations but mostly these are historical 
connections and unless we are planning on nationalizing hospitals they 
are likely to remain that way.
