About a woman changing her name to the husband's . . .respect, sexist or just "too much trouble."

Having done “the whole route”—took my husband’s name in 1969; after 6 yrs. of marriage

& “consciousness-raising”; tried alternatives, such as hyphenating both of our names –-

with his last (found people considered my last name to be the name they heard last—His);

tried it the other way & it was still cumbersome.  Finally I just went back to my birth name,

even though that came from a man—my father – but at least I had had THAT identity for 21 yrs.

I considered, also, inventing a whole new name, but that would have required me to start from

“scratch” to build an identity. . .& I wouldn’t have had a sense of my own history as much.

Now?  I wouldn’t change my name for love or money.  It’s a matter of principle & practicality!

P.  S.  What man would be willing to change His name to the woman’s?!  I’ve done “informal

Polling” & haven’t found even one man who would be willing—no matter how liberal he is.
