SHSNY Book Club - This Explains Everything

THIS EXPLAINS EVERYTHING: Deep, Beautiful, and Elegant Theories of How the World Works. Editor: John Brockman

Our June book club meeting will be held on the usual first Thursday, June 6th, and will be another delightful Edge book, This Explains Everything, edited by John Brockman.  It is a 2013 book, but is already available in paperback, a few used copies through Amazon, and downloadable in a Kindle edition.  With the last, you don't need a Kindle; you can download it to any computer or tablet.  If there are any people left who haven't gotten into the Edge books, you'll love them.  (Also check out Edge.org.) The editor asks people to share their thoughts in  just a couple pages, so you can read all at once or any individual ones that intrigue you.

Responding to the question, "What is your favorite deep, elegant, or beautiful explanation?," Leonard Susskind comes up with one of them, Boltzmann's Explanation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, then explains how that leads him to his favorite unsolved problem.  You won't have to be a physicist to understand it.  You won't have to be a cynic to understand Aubrey De Grey's choice of The Overdue Demise of Monogamy.  And you need only be a human to understand Scott Atran's The Power of Absurdity.

In fact, these ideas may very well make you rush out to buy our July selection, Edward O. Wilson's The Social Conquest of Earth but of that, more anon.

Join us even if you haven't finished reading. The SHSNY Book Club is open to all ... and free!

The distinguished gentleman to Elaine's left mentioned that a leading indicator of bad economic times is rich men ditching their mistresses. This reminded me of the lyric:
"He's your guy when stocks are high,
But beware when they start to descend.
It's then that those louses go back to their spouses
Diamonds are a girl's best friend."

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
