Sonoran West End loop

Description:

RSVPs open now and close at 6:00pm on 11/15/2013

7:30 am is the carpool time from Fry’s at Hayden & Thompson Peak; 8:15 am is the start time from the trailhead

This is a moderate-strenuous hike of about 8 miles in Maricopa County’s McDowell Mountain Regional Park, which abuts the McDowell Mountain Sonoran Preserve to the east. We recommend carpooling from Fry’s because there is limited parking at the trailhead.

We start with a 0.5 mile walk through the community and an easy 0.6 miles on the Dixie Mine trail to the intersection of the Sonoran trail.  The Sonoran trail runs about 2 miles toward the south with lots of ups and downs of moderate elevation gain.  The Sonoran trail ends at the Promenade trail, which shortly connects with the West End Loop trail.  We hike up a steep section a bit over 0.5 miles, over a ridge, then down about the same distance on the other side.  We return on a portion of the Promenade trail back on the Sonoran trail, and retrace our path back to the parking area.

Rating:  Moderate-strenuous

Trail type:  Maintained

Estimated hiking time:  4 hours

Total distance:  8 miles

Elevation gain: [masked]’ total gain

What to bring:  Plenty of water and/or sports drink, snacks or lunch, clothing suitable for the weather.  Poles are recommended.

Fee:  There is a $2 or $3 entrance fee to the park.

Carpool location:  Fry’s patio at the southeast corner of Hayden and Thompson Peak in Scottsdale.  It is a 40 minute drive to the trailhead.  Plan on a $3 contribution to the driver.

Directions to the trailhead:  Head east on Shea toward Fountain Hills.  Turn left on Palisades and go a couple of miles to Golden Eagle Boulevard.  Turn left again and go until just before the road ends at the Eagles Nest access gate.  Park in the lot on the left.

Hey, Steve. I think I said I would be at Fry's, but we will meet you at the trailhead not Fry's.
