Hike to the Petroglyphs at the Dixie Mine and Loop Back
Note: This is an exploratory hike. Although members of the club have done parts of this hike, the entire loop as described is a new adventure. Mileage and elevations are best estimates.
7:45 AM: Start time from the carpool location
8:30 AM: Start time from Golden Eagle Blvd parking lot
We will hike the Dixie Mine Trail in the McDowell Mountain Regional Park to the Dixie Mine, where there are a number of petroglyphs visible from the trail. We will then continue up the wash to meet the Prospector Trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. There are petroglyphs visible through the wash, as well, if you take the time to look back behind you. Most of the climb in the hike will take place on the way up the wash and up the Prospector Trail.
When the Prospector Trail meets the Bell Pass trail, we will continue clockwise around a loop, down Bell Pass Trail to the Windmill Trail, re-entering the Regional Park. We will finish the clockwise loop on the Coach Whip trail and rejoin the Dixie Mine Trail to return to the trailhead.
Bring sturdy hiking shoes, water, a light snack and a camera.
