8:00am is the start time from the trailhead; 7:30am is the carpool time from Fry’s at Hayden and Thompson Peak

This easy to moderate hike in the McDowells starts at the 104th Street trailhead.  You may meet us at the trailhead at 8:00 am or at Fry’s at 7:30 am to carpool to the trailhead.

We start with a 2.6 mile, 350’ climb on the Quartz trail, through a desert wash in the McDowell Mountain Ranch community.  We continue on the Quartz trail past the Taliesen and Lost Dog trails into an area of the park that is fairly isolated and very pretty.  The Quartz trail deadends after  another 2.3 miles and 750’ of elevation.

At this point we will take a short break and then retrace our steps back to the intersection of the Taliesen trail.  From here, it is an easy 2.4 miles downhill to the WestWorld trail, passing under 105th Street and around the McDowell Mountain golf course.  After 0.8 miles on the WestWorld trail and another 0.8 miles on the Quartz trail, we return to the 104th Street trailhead.

Rating: Moderate

Trail type: Well maintained but rocky and overgrown above the Lost Dog intersection

Estimated hiking time: 6 hours

Total distance: 11.5 miles

Elevation: 1600’ lowest, highest 2700’

What to bring: Plenty of water and/or sports drink, snacks or lunch, clothing suitable for the weather.  A rain jacket or poncho is always a good idea.

Carpool location: Fry’s patio at the southeast corner of Hayden and Thompson Peak in Scottsdale.  We will leave at 7:35 am.  It is a 15 minute drive to the trailhead.  A contribution to the driver is not necessary.

Directions to carpool location (if other than Fry’s Patio): No alternate location

Directions to the trailhead: From Fry’s, turn right onto Thompson Peak and follow it to McDowell Mountain Ranch Road (3/4 mile south of Bell).  Turn left (east) and go about 0.4 miles to 104th Street.  Turn right on 104th Street; the parking lot is on your right.

I think yes. It is just west of Thompson Peak.

I am going to have to cancel. My granddaughter is going to be staying with me.

Oh I will just have to give it a try. Anyone else out there thinking this might be too long, I will be your company sitting on a rock waiting for the spirited hikers to return to us.
