We will meet in Knoxville at the Food Lion on Ashville Hwy off exit 394 on I-40 E at 8AM. We will be leaving by 8:15. Please note in your RSVP if you will be meeting us at the trailhead rather than this location.
We will then take I-40 east to N.C. exit #20 to reach the Cataloochee area.
This will be a STRENUOUS HIKE. Please do not RSVP if you are not sure of your hiking ability. We will be going 3.2 miles on Big Fork Ridge Trail with an elevation gain of around 800 ft, head down around 600 ft, and then hit the fun part of the day with a 1600 ft elevation gain on the 2.3 miles of McKee Branch trail. Weather permitting we can stop for a lunch break at the Appalachian Highlands Science and Learning Center, where there are great views on a clear day. Then we will turn around and do it all in reverse.
Or another option would be to drop a car or cars on the day of the hike at the Big Fork Ridge Trailhead, start at the Cataloohee Divide trailhead and hike 4.6 miles to the intersection of McKee Branch trail and head downhill to Big Fork Ridge. The length of the hike this way would be be shorter and the elevation gain on the Cataloochee Divide trail is around 1000 ft over the 4.6 miles.
This decision will be made on the day of the hike based on a group vote.

If there is inclement weather and the road to the Big Fork Ridge Trailhead is closed we will do the Cataloochee Divide trail to the Swag, which offers excellent views on a clear day.

It was good to meet you Rachel B. I am sorry that you were not able to go on, but we were glad to see the note on the car to let us know that you had gotten back safely. No worries, better to turn back then to put yourself in a dangerous position on the trail. Look forward to seeing you again soon.

I want to say Thank You! Today, I went on the hike and I had issues with my asthma. So, I had to quit the hike and return to my car. I was very lucky because I always carry my inhaler with me when hiking. I have been sick lately. Early this week, I had asthma attack. I have been resting and thought that I would be able to hike today, but unfortunately asthma can become an issue at anytime and any place. I just want to say thank eveyone for your understanding and support.

I just called the park service and the road is open as of when the message was recorded, so looks like we are good to go for the AM. It will be cold though so make sure to bundle up. Layer, layer, layer.

Also the road could be closed if there has been snow. If this is the case, stop at the gate and we will do a hike from that point on Catalooche Divide trail to the Science Center.

If you plan on meeting at the trailhead more detailed directions are, NC exit 20 from I-40, west to Cove Creek Rd, to Catalochee Rd, drive to the end of Catalochee Rd past the campground and Ranger Station and continue down Rough Fork Rd .8 miles to the trailhead on the left. Watch out for Elk in this area.

    •  I am so glad to be a part of these events. For those people sitting on their couches waiting on the weather to improve. HA you missed a great one.
    •  I really enjoyed the people that I met in the group and everyone was very friendly! It was really neat to see the herd elk! The hike seemed to be very nice, but I had to quit the hike due to my asthma. I am sure it was an excellent place to hike! I will return and do this trail once I feel better and I have my asthma under control.
    •  It was an awesome hike! Great views and an elk herd at the end!
    •  What a great hike, I was worried that everyone would bail due to the cold weather, but everyone made it. Great views and it was soooo cool coming out of the woods to the car and seeing a heard of Elk. Thanks for helping me get some more miles on my map.
