Indian Grave Point Cave Day Trip

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Indian Grave Point (IGP) Cave is named for the Native American ceremonies that took place there. IGP is located outside of Dowelltown (pop 310) in DeKalb County, Tennessee - a mile from the site of The Battle of Snow Hill, the fight between the Confederate Army and the 9th Cavalry which occurred on April 3rd, 1863. This cave is a semi-bi-level, horizonal, saltpeter, wet cave. IGP was surveyed in 1955 and is recorded as reaching a depth of 112 feet and a length of 3.2 miles, making it the 41st longest cave in Tennessee, and the largest in its area. This trip will be led by a very experienced caver from the "Chronic Caver" Grotto, based out of Murfreesboro, TN. He has generously volunteered to lead our group at no charge, and has extensive knowledge about and experience in this particular cave. We are responsible for providing our own gear (including gloves, helmets, kneepads, lugsole workboots, and 3 headlamps) for this trip. This trip requires "3 points of light" (A primary light source, as well as 2 backup light sources). Keep in mind that this is wild caving in a natural, noncommercial cave so, there is no electrical lighting or groomed paths of any kind inside the cave. We will be exploring the cave for approximately 4 hours so, make sure you are up for at least 4 hours of rigorous activity. Additionally, be prepared to walk over different ground surfaces such as mud, gravel, and shallow water. Also.... Caves are muddy. The clothes you wear are likely to get ruined so, dress accordingly. Additionally, be sure to bring a change of clothes for after the caving expedition. There will be no shower or bathroom facilities so, don't forget the wet wipes to clean up after crawling around in the cave all day. Also, biodegradable TP is advisable. Be sure to bring a camelback/daypack with plenty of water (there are no water sources close to the cave), a sack lunch, and snacks to last you the day. Total drive time to the cave will be approximately 2 1/2 hours. We will meet for carpooling at 8:00 AM in the shopping plaza at 9117 Executive Park Drive Knoxville, TN[masked] Click on the link for some really cool pics of IGP.... http://nashvillegrott...

I just wanted to remind/inform people about WNS or White Nose Syndrome... the fungus that kills the bats. If you are using gear that has ever been in another cave (especially the Worley trip, which was fairly far to the northeast), please decontaminate it thoroughly to ensure you aren't spreading it. Start by cleaning all mud/dirt/dust off the gear, then follow the decon protocol
