No, we will not be doing this hike early enough to capture the sunrise from the fire tower as someone did in the pic. We will save that for another day. This is a Sunday morning hike, that will allow you to tackle the Chimneys on Saturday and do this on Sunday. Both of these hikes are short hikes. However this is no short easy walk in the park hike. This is a very strenuous hike. We will take our time climbing to the top. This and the Chimneys are two good weekend challenging hikes to do back to back. The views will make it worth it.
Mount Sterling Tower is a 60-foot tall, metal and wood observation deck perched above a dozen flights of stairs. The Mount Sterling Tower was manned several months out of the year by watchers who lived in a nearby cabin for two-week tours. Sterling is one of only three towers left inside the park, and is the highest true fire tower in the eastern U.S. Built in 1935, Sterling hasn’t been manned since the ‘60s.
This low ridge trail begins at Mt. Sterling Gap on Cataloochee-Big Creek Road. It is rated extremely strenuous because of a 2,000-foot climb in 2.3 miles along an old jeep trail to a ridge .5 miles below the Mt. Sterling Firetower. This fire tower is one of three remaining in the Park.
There are several excellent lookouts from the trail prior to reaching the main ridge, but the view from the tower is unequalled in the Park. The view includes the Pigeon River Gorge (below), the Unaka Mountains, the main ridge of the Smokies, the Black Mountains (east), and the end of the Southern Appalachians.
Take a look at the various links below about the hike and the tower.
This is the trail map for the hike http://files.meetup.c...
Some history of the area and review of the hike.
This has a review of the tower and additional pics.

Trying to determine what week to view the area from the tower for fall colors is a hard call. I decided to risk going earlier in October. What better way to spend a Sunday morning, than seeing what has been created for us to enjoy.
I read that the Baxter Creek Trail was one of the hardest and steepest trails in the Smokies. I think I will save it for next year.
This is one of the top four toughest hikes in the park. You will gain 2000 feet elevation in 2 miles. This is a very strenuous hike. The descent will be just as strenuous. You need to be up for strenuous hikes for this hike. Based on what others have told me advised me about this hike you need to be hiking moderate to strenuous hikes on a regular basis to attempt this trail. This reminder is to prevent you from getting to the trailhead and discovering this hike is harder than you imagined.
This route is the shortest route and I agree that a 1000 ft per mile is quite a hike but compared to Baxter Creek this is a walk in the park. I did this trail eairlier this year as part of a loop. We saw a mommy bear and 3 cubs at the 0.5 mile mark. Still looking for a ride from Big Creek hiker parking area to the trailhead. I would like to hike down Baxter Creek. Its been several years since I climbed this trail and want to do it in reverse.
Terry, we will work out ride details with you closer to the hike day. We will swing by Big Creek and pick you up.
I would recommend going up the tower itself 1-2 at a time. Not sure it could take this big group!
I doubt that I could talk everyone into going up the tower even one at a time, once they see it. We will let you come join us on this easy way up to the tower.
If you have any questions about the changes on meeting and directions please contact me. Terry, we will meet you at Big Creek Campground.

Wait a minute now, you guys are going up the easy way! :) I suggest you view it after going up Baxter Creek!
