Santa Hat Hike to the 'Little Known Waterfall'

  • December 21, 2013 · 10:00 AM

Carpool, carpool, carpool! If you are arriving alone or with only one other person in your car then try to get to the Townsend Y around 9:30 and pull into the parking lot to try to pick up more members or to ride with some one else.  The  Y will be the staging area for those who will make it that far without carpooling and others will allow you to pile into their car for the short ride to the Tremont area. I will be at the Y at 9:30 to pick up people myself, carpooling is a must for the number of people who are attending this hike!

Find your Santa hat and let's go for a hike. We have done this hike for the past five years so it only seems fitting that we do it again and continue to build on this seasonal outing, plus it makes for a very festive group photo!

The holiday season is upon us and it is time to go back to this great little waterfall . This hike is out of the Tremont area so there is plenty of parking for us. This trail is an easy 2 miles in and 2 back out and is rated easy- mid-moderate The trail does continue on past the falls for about 3/4 of a mile to an old logging road and the top stream which feeds the falls for those who wish to trudge on to explore it. With a lot of the leaves gone from the trees it will allow for some nice views of the surrounding area. This trail winds around the sides of the hills and the uphill sections are fairly mild and a cinch to conquer.

For those who have been wanting a hike between the easy and moderate ratings ,this is the one. This hike is also just the right length for most kids to enjoy. I will have a bunch of hats to cover those who do not have their own.

----To get to the trailhead; When you enter the Park from Townsend go to the 'Y' and turn right towards Cades Cove. The Tremont area will come up quick on your left, turn in and go back to the main parking lot and info center on your left, we will be there.

It has become a custom after this hike to go to The Back Porch restaurant in Townsend and warm up with some really good home cooked comfort food, please plan on doing it with us this year also!

The first pic of the waterfall, I thought it was Fern Branch Falls, along the Porters Creek trail. But, then, I thought "no", they went somewhere else. Will you share the location? Thanks. So glad you all had a great time. I loved the pics; actually, it really hurt that I wasn't able to hike (any trail) because of the 2 toes, that I think I will eventually lose :(

Answering my own question: Spruce Flats Falls off Lumber Ridge Trail. I was there Nov '12. You seemed to have more water this time - lucky guys!

Going to play this by ear. If I am remotely able to do it, I will be there. It's all about working with my son to finish a Christmas present for my ex and to get it mailed in time. I released our two spots....if we finish and are able in the morning I'll check to see if they are still open. There are a few now I see. Life gets in the way of my plans...again.. :-(

Alas, this is too close to Christmas and we won't be available. I'm not sure the little bit could stand the cold anyway. Next year!
