Hey, gang, a few items:
a) We're still on for tonight unless it floods or there's a hurricane, etc. Having said that, if you don't feel safe, please don't come out. If the turnout is low, we can just reschedule, etc.
b) On that note, let's skip the orchards tonight. Lightning and reaching up into trees don't mix.
c) But we should start thinking about fruit fast! My kid and I checked out some JP spots yesterday, and some raspberries are already coming in, as well as cherries. The League of Urban Canners (LURC) (see (e)) recently snagged over 100lbs. of apricots, and they are reporting that some apple trees already have ripe fruit. This year, much of the fruit seems to be coming early. (The grapes, peaches and blueberries are taking their usual time, though.)
d) Iris Weaver, whom I believe is also a member of our group, recently led an urban foraging class with the Urban Homesteaders Meetup. If this is your thing, you should join them, too. Also, here's a blog article that another urban homesteader wrote about it, complete with illustrations:
http://katfriedrich.wordpress.com/2012/06/24/foraging-in-the-urban-wild/e) Lastly, with all the fruit that they've been getting, and with all the more fruit to come, the League of Urban Canners (LURC) is looking for more harvesters/canners, etc. All the fruit is shared, so you'll get your cut. Hey Networkers,
Can you all post the following to any appropriate news groups or sites? We really need to
recruit more people especially as we get into apple and grape season!
Thanks,
Sam

Got Time? Want Jam?
The League of Urban Canners (LUrC) is looking for people to help us with harvesting and canning
fruit grown on public and private property in Cambridge and Somerville. Each year, a lot of
apples, cherries, mulberries, grapes, pears, plums, apricots and other fruit growing in our
neighborhood goes unharvested since many owners simply don't have the time or resources to
process them.
LUrC harvests this fruit and cans it into sauce, jam or butter. Harvesters and canners keep
their share of the product with 10% reserved for the owner. This season, we have already
harvested over 200 lbs of cherries, mulberries and apricots.
Most of the harvesting and canning takes place on weekends. You can commit to as many hours as
you like. If you are interested, please contact us at [address removed]
