Red Rock Canyon group trip

  • Mar 14, 2014 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is an advanced trip--you MUST have lead climbing/belaying skills and your own gear--a rope and set of draws for every two people will be needed. DO bring a helmet.
Trad climbing is also plentiful and some people will do multi-pitch routes. Sean Smith may be there to lead some multi-pitch routes, but guides can also be hired in advance if two of you wish to do that. http://www.redrockclimbingcenter.com/mountain_guides.htm
People will need to team up and fly in and rent cars, etc as groups.....I am not available to help with this, and am not sure I will be able to attend, so post here on comments or write to others directly. Our usual hotel is booked, so I am looking for ideas on condos--this seems to be a busy weekend! Alternatively, we can go a week or two earlier if rooms are more available. we wish to stay closer to the canyon, NOT on the strip for early-morning convenience.
People usually fly SWA to take advantage of the free baggage.

Hey guys: sorry I didn't get a chance to get on the site. Yep, unfortunately I have to work all weekend. I hope you guys have a good time!

    March 14, 2014

  • Chris

Hey guys; sorry it took me awhile to respond; I've been out of town for work. I just found out that a trial that was supposed to finish this week was pushed back another two weeks. There is a slim possibility I might still be able to go, but its not looking good. I'll know for sure in the next few days. If I am still able to go, I can definitely pick people up at the airport or in the mornings since I'll have a car.

    March 6, 2014

    • Kira

ooohh--we hope you can join. ALice rented a car and Sean needs to get one--and with 6, as long as the sport climbers all go one way and the multis another, two is plenty.

      March 6, 2014

    • Kira

      Chris--what's the final word?

      March 13, 2014

  • Albert C.

For those of you leaving your car at midway, this is the cheapeast off-airport parking lot I've found: http://www.midwayparksaver.com/. There is no shuttle to the airport. It's close to the bus terminal so you'll walk outside from the parking lot to the bus terminal and then inside a little ways until you reach Midway.

    March 2, 2014

    • Kira

I use EZ park since it is on my way and they wash my car for $10! yes shuttle.

      March 6, 2014

  • Albert C.

Sofa is fine with me. Yeah, I know I'm on my own to make it back to the airport.

    January 15, 2014

    • Kira

which might mean we have Sean rent a car and you two go back together in it? which allows Sean to have a car for each day's multi? then either of Don or Alice also get a car for the others in the condo? Chris S--do you know your plans each day?

      February 12, 2014

    • Kira

suggest whoever goes with Sean pay for his rental the day of your multipitch climb.

      February 12, 2014

  • Albert C.

Has anyone rented a car yet?

Hi Albert, I'm going to rent the car this week for us. I'll let you know once I've done this

      February 9, 2014

    • Kira

Alice--we may have Sean and Don do the cars--we gotta get this finalized, don't we?

      February 12, 2014

  • Chris

I just booked my airfare. It looks like I am on the same flight as Kira, flying Southwest Friday morning and arriving 8:20 am. I'm going to fly back Sunday, though, at 8:00 am. I'll get my own rental car, but anybody else that wants to share is welcome. Also, I'll probably just get a cheap hotel somewhere close to Red Rocks, but might think about camping.

I don't have access to the planning Spreadsheet. Albert, could you send me the info for it? Otherwise could somebody update my info on it?

    Thanks!

    January 16, 2014

    • Kira

chris--send Albert your direct e-mail via this site and he can get you access to the spreadsheet. We might need as third car to accommodate a trio headed each day on a multi earlier than the rest will head out.

      February 12, 2014

  • Chris

If anybody is looking for rooms, I booked a hotel room at Hampton Inn and Suites Red Rock, which had plenty of availability.

    January 16, 2014

    • Kira

welcome to the real trip :-) who else is IN?

      January 16, 2014

  • Kira

Alice--can we put you in charge of renting a car for our condo-group? Albert, any interest in our sofa? you would be on your own to get back to airport if you are in our car and no one else is leaving Monday AM.
    who else is REALLY coming?

how far is the airport from the condo? I could drive Albert on Monday morning to the airport before climbing?

      January 16, 2014

    • Albert C.

My flight is at 6am which means you'd have to be up too early. I'm fine taking a cab. Thanks for offering though.

      January 16, 2014

  • Chris

Also, I have trad gear that I'll bring (full rack of BD C3 and C4 cams up to 3, doubles on 1 and 2, X4s in 0.2 and .75, and stoppers). I'll also bring my ropes and anchor cord. If anybody doesn't get a chance to go over route cleaning, rappelling, etc. with Kira, but yet wants to climb an easy multi-pitch , I can go over that stuff with anybody once we are out there, too. I'll also bring my two guidebooks and can recommend some easier routes if anybody is interested in checking them out beforehand. I've climbed at Red Rocks a few times before and can recommend some awesome routes or single pitch areas with bolted anchors.

Just booked my ticket on Southwest, returning Mon from LAS at 6:00am. Lowest ticket prices on Southwest currently $376/round-trip.

    I'm out :(

    January 10, 2014

    • Kira

      :-(

      January 12, 2014

  • Kira

can folks who are bringing trad gear please make a note? I know Sean and Alex are. Also, Sean, do you have requirements in terms of training for people who want to join you on a multi?

    December 22, 2013

    • Kira

Denise--as far as I know, I am still allowed to hep people learn to clean a sport route on the sample anchors, and that would include rapping :-) let's pick a Sunday. this week Arnoldo and I are supposed to be doing a beginner technique hour. Next week might work if you can be there.

      January 9, 2014

    • Denise

Kira that's awesome thanks! Next Sunday works for me :-)

Rather than trying to schedule things through this entry or the message board, I created a spreadsheet in Google Docs to coordinate everything. Please email me ([masked]) with your email address and I will share the document with you, allowing you to edit the document.

Hi guys: I saw that the trip is all full, but if any room opens up please let me know. I've climbed in Red Rocks before three times in the last few years and am comfortable leading multipitch trad up to 5.7 or so there (I have my own trad gear and a couple of ropes), or following up to 5.10. I've climbed Crimson Chrysallis, Crabby Appleton, Y2K, Frigid Air Buttress, and Physical Graffiti out there, and in a bunch of the single pitch areas, and I have a couple of guidebooks for the area. Hopefully I could join you!

    --Chris

    January 9, 2014

    • Kira

ok, so just Denise is waiting--Denise--assume it is fine--I will not add a slot just for appearances, but assume it is fine to join! Bryce and Dries, hope you can join! and Arnoldo, who was also waiting for info......

      January 9, 2014

    • Chris

Cool; thanks! I'm glad it worked out and thank you so much! I will probably just get a rental car on my own and then camp in the campground or else get a hotel room on the strip; I've done both before and either works well. I'll let you guys know in case anyone wants to split the car with me, etc.

      January 9, 2014

  • Chris

Also, given that it looks like there are a handful of other interested people, would it be possible to increase the group size or schedule another group? There is so much climbing out there that even with a lot more people we wouldn't have any problems finding empty areas to climb; I've been there in March before and it wasn't too crowded.

    January 9, 2014

    • Albert C.

No reason the extras can't make arrangements on our own and climb together.

      January 9, 2014

  • Albert C.

For those of you who've purchased your airlines tickets, what flight times did you select?

    January 5, 2014

    • Kira

see below for mine--ALice and I were the only ones with tix last I saw--first SW flight Fri, last one Mon. I booked arrival 8:20am Fri, departure 6:35 PM Mon on SWA

      January 5, 2014

    • Kira

folk--I advise people to decide if they are coming and get tickets--and a condo/hotel/camping thing.....we ARE showing up at the start of the season there. AFAIK only Alice and myself have actual tickets.

  • Alex R.

Hey Kira, I'll be bringing trad gear: a set of nuts, tricams, and hexes (as you know, I don't have cams, but may try to pick up a set before the trip). I also have a full set of draws and a bunch of extendables, plus a 65m rope. Also, as per Sean's request for experience levels and such for multi pitch, I am comfortable leading 5.10 to 5.11, and can trad 5.9, with the occasional 10. I also know a fair amount of self rescue: everything from escaping the belay, rescue rappelling, ascending ropes, to setting up haul systems. I'm up for lots of multi-pitch, depending on room in parties and such.

    December 29, 2013

  • Kira

also, if you are interested in multi-pitch, we may see if we can get Sean to do a rescue and escape the belay class with us as well....harder now that he is not at VE :-( but safer for those doing multi-pitch to at least now a few basics in case of emergency!

    December 11, 2013

    • Sean S.

There is always doing a class at Devils Lake if anyone is up for dealing with the cold. I cannot do any teaching or coaching at VE with the current atmosphere there. Should be okay, just a little slower going, if things are being taught on route out there.

I found a $380 flight with southwest dep the 14th afternoon come back 17th late afternoon. Does anyone found a better deal? Where does everyone is going to stay, which hotel or villa? Hey Kira this are the only date or there is another one? What about transportation?

    December 9, 2013

    • Bryce

I'm interested in a camper but I can't make final plans yet - waiting for confirmation from my +2.

      December 17, 2013

    • Kira

I think Alice and I are the only ones with actual tickets thus far :-)

      December 22, 2013

  • Kira

yikes--sorry--I forgot--in addition to lead climbing/belaying, route cleaning is mandatory as well. I can teach class at VE before we go out there.

    Hi Kira,
I will book the same flights as you. As for accommodation, I have no other confirmations on the campervan but am still keen if anyone else still is. Otherwise, I will join you with your selected accommodation.

    December 20, 2013

  • Kira

hey, peeps--we need ideas of who is staying where and when arriving/departing to start to coordinate and make reservations and whatnot. PLEASE post your info!

    December 19, 2013

  • Dries

Flights seem to be cheaper when returning Tuesday. ANybody interested in doing an extra day?

    December 17, 2013

    • Kira

I'd have to fly early morning, to work tues eve, which would mean another hotel night with no climbing, so Monday eve works better for me.

      December 17, 2013

    • Kira

the Sherwins may come and fly Tues, Dries.....

      December 19, 2013

  • Dries

I'm interested; Can lead, belay and wouldn't mind doing some multi-pitch routes.
Could stay a few days longer as well if enough people are interested in doing that.

    December 16, 2013

  • Kira

ok, people--I need to start getting firm numbers--condo vs camper and how many days--

    December 16, 2013

    • Kira

please post preferred arrival/departure times to help with car decisions.

      December 16, 2013

    • Kira

ok--I booked a refundable room t Cliffs--two br two baths--can hold 3-6 depending on bed-sharing :-) (three queens) I am fine with just having 3 people. --one spot for Dries if he signs up.

      December 16, 2013

  • Kira

I also found a refundable room at Cliffs at Peace Canyon which is a great place.....a little more expensive than the non-refundable desert paradise.....can get condo 1 BR or 2 BR--these sleep as many people as can handle the closeness--2 BR is two full baths, plus sleeper sofa......can handle up to 6 who do not mind closeness :-)

    December 15, 2013

  • Kira

problem I see with camping is the short days--a camper makes more sense than a tent since it is cold by 5 and dark by 6 and also warms up later in the morning.......climb hours are 9-5 this time of year, which is fine, but camping depends upon your ability to entertain yourself :-) in a small space.
what do others think? I have never camped at RRC, so have no idea how it is arranged--imagine this will not be an overly busy time of year.

on a quick glance $450 for 4 people for 3 night in a campervan not including gas and camping fee. Just over $110 each for the weekend. Not bad...

      December 13, 2013

  • Bryce

I have two friends that are interested in going. One is a lead climber, the other is not.

    December 11, 2013

I was thinking tent camping but if no one else camping ill be more than happy for a campervan! How much theyll run for Alice? Anyone else interesred?

One option could be to hire a campervan between a few people? they aren't that expensive and there is a campground in red rocks. It's basic but close to the climbs and would double as out vehicle. I did it with cruise america campervans last time and worked really well
