Beginning Banjo 1 & 2: Intro to Bluegrass Style

*This workshop is cancelled due to lack of participants.  We hope you can join us next time!*

Have you ever wanted to learn how to play the banjo? Or pick up where you left off? This is your chance! This 5 week course will be an introduction to bluegrass-style banjo picking. Each of the classes will focus on a different basic skill. Skills will include picking hand form and technique, basic bluegrass picking patterns, basic fretting hand technique, reading banjo tab, and how to keep a rhythm. At the end of the class, each student will have learned enough to play basic bluegrass songs. We will also be learning a song during class that we will get at least part of the way through by the end. Come join us for this great introductory course!

Instructor Matt P. has been playing banjo for nearly twelve years. He was trained in the bluegrass style and from there branched into genres such as blues, folk, klezmer, and world music. He has a preference for improvisation in his playing style but knows that a firm grounding in basic technique and skills is essential for any player. He has been teaching banjo lessons for four years with a diverse range of students. As a teacher, he aims to meet the student where they are at with their skill level, experience, and interests, and then takes them through the next stages of banjo playing. When Matt is not playing banjo he enjoys meditating and practicing qi gong.

No experience necessary. All participants must come to each class with their own 5-string banjo (purchased or rented), as well as picks for your thumb, middle, and index fingers. Not sure where to find a banjo? Try Woodsongs in Boulder-they rent banjos for $25/month. Sheets of banjo tab will be supplied to each participant throughout the course. For participants ages 12 and older, minimum of 3 participants, maximum of 8. Pre-registration is required.

5 Mondays, 7-8pm, July 21 & 28, August 4, 11 & 25 (skipping August 18)

Cost: $98
