Grow edibles indoors

With winter upon us, I am interested in learning about indoor growing setups and if people grow edibles in the winter months. Are there people who have experience doing this or would be willing to share how their indoor farm works? Are there certain types of veggies/herbs/fruits that do better than others?

Amazing to learn different ways to do gardening. Myrhia is a master of replicating garden systems with low cost components.

I didn't realize the date was changed to today until I read the email on Sat. A friend and I had plans for Sat, but I'll change. Could I bring my friend?

Hi! We are out of town until Sunday evening so I won't be able to attend. Is there going to be another one of these events? Also, is anyone going to take minutes to post? Thanks!

Hopefully - I've sent this information in an email Been trying to get a handle on the numbers - and there were a slew of Yes's yesterday, and some were put on a wait list- changed the settings - All are Welcome. Best guess, we will be about 20.

In addition, Nicole Williams has offered to bring and talk about her success using the aeroponic Tower Gardens. The more options - the better! I also included detailed directions to my place - looking forward to meeting you all

What are the costs to attend this workshop?

    September 9, 2012

    • MzMyrhia

Mary, asking for $5 buck donation. It will be used towards materials for counter top hydroponic gardens. A kinda mini Salad Tree as described in previous comments. Each participant will get one to take home.

Need some help here - says there are 57 attending - figure that's about interest. Need to buy planters, PVC tubes and vermiculite - so need realistic count on who will be attending please. And if ALL y'all are attending, wow, then I'm definitely going to need some help and volunteers. The yard space can handle the numbers but need more folks for the hands on part. Does anyone know how to get a message to members that they need to amend their posts - from being interested to will be or not be there??? I'm kinda computer - message board not smart. To move the workshop along time wise, need to prep the planters by cutting the PVC tubes down and cementing (needs to dry) the tubes into the planters. Want to have enough for everyone. Thanks in advance.

The date and time were just a suggestion...I'm guessing it might last for 2-3 hours. As for where...I'd offer to host but I don't really have a space for it. Anyone have ideas? :)

To give folks time to schedule the event and still have good weather how about changing the date to: Sunday, Sept 16

Time: 1:30 - 3:30 pm Location: Near Denver Merchandise Mart - I-25 and 58th Ave
(Address and Map provided to RSVP members.) Event: Indoor gardening and edibles. Participants will be shown how to use basic aero and hydroponics principals to extend their gardening season year round. Using that information, they will be putting together and "planting" gardens - including their take home 2 1/2 ft counter top hydroponic garden.

A $5 donation is asked to cover the materials and supplies of the take home hydroponic gardens
Feeling lucky??? There will be a drawing from the attendees for the demo home made areo garden
Refreshments will be provided Contact Amber and Myrhia with questions

Amber, that should of been provide the location and some systems - didn't mean to hijack the idea - - Let me know how can help.

It could be a hands on meet up for a couple of hours (?). I don't have the time to "plant" them pre meet up, but have several counter top gardens that need "planting". So, meet up participants could be used to "plant" those gardens, along with learning the methodology of making homemade ones. The home made one used to demo could be put in a drawing to be won by a participant. In addition, have examples of the hydroponic - and can do something similiar. If someone has other systems would like to show - that would be great too.

I ended up starting a lot of seeds indoors this past year in my basement with lights and whatnot. It went so well (some of them started flowering and producing beans and whatnot way too early), that I think I could leverage the same setup to grow lettuce, spinach, herbs that sort of thing in the winter.

Two questions.... where would we be meeting and how long will the meetup be?

Vermiculite/container gardens grew 5' of lettuce and at the base the container had several holes which had cherry tomatoes, peppers, herbs. Red leaf was the heartiest (most vitamins) also did green and mix and if didn't harvest the roots, it keeps producing. The cukes and zukes grow well, but mature ones don't transport well, the hollow stems break moving the container. Wouldn't do strawberries again. Have a picture of Salad Tree - If looking for indoor growing, these worked for me.

Marsha, living in RV 20 years in remote locals had to be creative to get fresh produce. Started with 5 ' - 3" PVC pipe filled with vermiculite - this evolved into the "Salad Tree" Did a lot of workshops sharing this inexpensive grow method because it was mobile could leave out when parked, cover with blanket if cold and load into unit and travel to next location. The Aero Gardens, yes original expense, but the DYI counter unit way is under $25 (?) w/ grow lites at 25 -50w - no water testing.

Is this meet up about Hydroponic systems which do not use soil as a grow medium, or soil in pots with grow lights, or either? Aquaponics looks costly initially, and water must be tested frequently for fish health, but seems like a great combination of fish and plant culture.

Aero Garden (dot com) - think I'm going into my sixth season. Have five on my kitchen counter - Started making home made ones and "gifting" to seniors for fresh salad greens year round - Desk lamp (Goodwill), grow light, plastic (Stearlite type) container, fish tank pump and bubble aerator (long one) - growing medium - varied and both Aero & Miracle Grow fertilizer* Expanded system 4' lites w/gift wrap plastic tote - grew rice as experiment. It worked - let me know if interested :-D

I bring pepper plants inside over the winter, and I do get peppers. They're smaller and not as frequent, but I still get some! I can bring some if this meetup ever gets scheduled!
