Come bike this gorgeous rail trail! If you haven’t been yet, it’s a flat, well-maintained hardpack bike trail, with spectacular views of the river.
Meet at Glen Onoko Park, Saturday, May 4, 2013, 11 a.m.
Glen Onoko is the southern access area and may be reached by taking Exit 74 of the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Follow US 209 south toward Lehighton, and continue to Jim Thorpe. Go through downtown Jim Thorpe, and after you pass the scenic railway station and parking lot on your right, take PA 903 north across the river. At the stop sign, keep going straight. (Do not take PA 903, which bears to the right.) After a short distance, turn left at the entrance to the park.
There are many spots to park along the side of the road, mostly on the right as you drive into the park. You can park at one these, or continue across the bridge and park in the first lot you come to, or continue around to another larger parking lot. We will meet up at the trailhead, which is the blue square on the map linked above. Don’t worry—it’s a very small park and you won’t be able to miss it.
In terms of bike, best to have at least a slightly larger, knobby tire. In terms of distance, go as far as you like and simply loop back when you want. Bring water and a snack/lunch. This event will be held rain or shine.
