Hike from Drehersville, Schuylkill County

January 4, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. hike from the first parking lot on Rockland Drive in Drehersville.

The distance will be @ 10-12 miles of trails, service roads, the AT and pavement in a rigorous loop. There are at least two long steep climbs, several wet areas and beautiful scenery. Total time on trail is expected to be less than 5 hours.

Directions: Take Rt. 61 north from I-78. Right onto Rt. 895. Right onto Hawk Mountain Road. Right onto Rockland Drive. left into the parking lot in the "S" turn. GPS[masked],-76.011565.

This is for very fit beginners and experienced hikers. Deep snow, blizzards and heavy rain will change the route, not cancel the hike.

Great group of people for a wonderful 3 hour hike in snow with a near 0 degree starting temperature.

I am so bummed that I won't make it tomorrow morning. Roads here are blown shot in several places, which will be icy tomorrow morning! Catch you next!

Bummer, I have seen you signed up on a few of my hikes but have not got a chance to meet you yet. THAT'S IT ... no one else is allowed to back out. In fact, I don't think it will be as bad as some fear so I am giving you ALL a second chance to reconsider and still join us. So if you have dropped out, IT IS NOT TOO LATE!!! The sun will be shining, the woods will be beautiful, you can do it.

Considering the weather and trail conditions-any particular gear suggestions?

Kathy, based on my limited experience as a rookie, I have a few suggestions. The day will start in the low single digits but by the end of the hike it is predicted to be sunny and 23 degrees. Maybe Tom should wear his kilt after all. You need layers since you will be cold at the beginning but as it warms up, the sun shines and we are working hard to trudge through the snow, you will get hot. I would have both heavy and light gloves and maybe two head options such as a balaclava and a light wool hat. If you don't have a balaclava you can use a neck up or a scarf. Even though our hands and heads will warm up from the effort, your face might be cold regardless. I have never used it but you might want to use moisturizer on your hands and face and something on your lips.

Part 2 - it was too long...
You need layers for your top so you have options and I would not overdo it on the pants since Tom said we are moving at a good pace. I will bring my snowshoes and microspikes and decide what to use when we start but the snow should not be so deep that you can't just go in your boots. Some nice clothes to change into back at the car and a towel are a plus and as Tom said, you will need to keep your water from freezing. You can start with warm water and nestle it in your pack upside down. Bring food that is easy to eat when cold and pack it warm too. On Wed I did a hike and I had a bar that was so frozen I almost broke my teeth.

It will be cold enough I will not be in a kilt for the first time on trail in almost a year. Dress warm and keep water bottles inside pockets.

Sorry I'm wimping out as well. Even though I've been in PA 8 years, I'm still an Arizona desert rat / wimp in the cold:)

Beginning hiker. I'm afraid it would be a little more than I would be able to handle, and I don't want to hold anyone back.

I will be planning a couple easier hikes and shorter hikes e Marsh in the next couple months. Aldo, check out the Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club Meetup for an easier hike on February 22 at French Creek.

As usual, I will probably be in a summer weight hiking kilt. However, I will have tights with me just in case.

There is apparently a snowstorm on the way. As long as there is no active snowing and the roads are open, we are still hiking. Look for a yellow Jeep in the parking area.
