make bat houses and bird houses

Learn about natural insect and rodent control by making bat houses and bird houses with a simplified, easy to assemble design. We are in the process of making and installing bat houses, bluebird houses, kestrel houses and barn owl boxes for natural insect and rodent control. This will protect our garden while providing homes to endangered bats, song birds, kestrels and owls. A hopeful side benefit will be lowering the amount of Lyme disease around our home by controlling the rodent hosts for this disease.

I'd be interested in attending but it's about 1-1/4 hour drive for me.

Is there anyone in the Allentown area willing to host a workshop? I will bring the wood pre-cut and all the necessary tools.

What is the fee for this? Thanks!

That is up to you. It costs me @ $5 to make either the bat house or bird house. We can make either or both. When I know how many people will show, I will pick up and cut the wood. I am happy people are thinking beyond pesticides to control insects and rodents.

What plans are you using for the bat houses?

    February 10, 2014

    • Tom

I am using a 1x4 for front and back, 1x2 for sides. Inside height is 18". Outside is 24" with a 3" landing area at the bottom. Front and back inside are grooved with a Dremel saw. Owl and kestrel boxes are done. Bluebird boxes are hinged on the bottom, instead of the sides to make it easier to clean. Photos are at: https://www.facebook.c...

Basically, the bat and bluebird house designs can be done with the equipment I have, the limitation being the saw size when cutting the wood.
