January 2013 Forum Meeting

7:00pm - MENSA FORUM

Snake Oil:  Everyone’s selling.  Are you buying?

We all know about snake oil.  It is that magical elixir that seems an answer to all that ails you, until you wake up in the morning with indigestion and an empty pocketbook.  It’s easy to spot snake oil… after it’s already too late.  In a marketplace of slickly packaged ideas the trick is recognizing snake oil while it’s still in the bottle, before you follow that seductive idea into oblivion.  In this presentation Dr. Hester talks about the different flavors of snake oil and how to avoid them.  But be warned.  The easiest snake oil to swallow is the fresh batch you brew for yourself every day.

Our Speaker:  Astrophysicist Jeff Hester is widely known for his work on the life cycle of stars, including the famous Hubble Space Telescope picture dubbed the "Pillars of Creation."  As a member of the science team responsible for the repair of Hubble, Dr. Hester has been front and center for some of the most exciting and dramatic events in the history of science.  Over the course of his career Dr. Hester gained a reputation as an inspirational and effective teacher and public speaker.  Broadcaster Hugh Downs referred to Dr. Hester as "one of the best explainers in our midst today."  After 20 years on the faculty, Dr. Hester recently took early retirement from Arizona State University.  These days when not SCUBA diving or backpacking he enjoys speaking to diverse audiences about topics ranging from the quantum nature of reality to practical ways of distinguishing reliable knowledge from horse manure.  Regardless of the specific topic Dr. Hester's ultimate message is always the same.  Reality is often not what you think it is.  And while belief in reality may be optional, participation in reality is not.

9:00 pm approx. - POST-FORUM DEBRIEFING. After the Forum, we will adjourn to the New China Gate Restaurant 7730 East McDowell Road #111, Scottsdale, AZ (480) 990-3388. https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=ml.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
