To members of the Separation of Church and State Meetup,
Instead of our regular March Meetup, we are delighted to announce that Rev. Barry Lynn, Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) will be speaking at our event in downtown Portland on March 11. (See details below.)
Perhaps the most effective voice for church/state separation today, Barry Lynn frequently appears on national TV news programs. He is a lively speaker who is always up-to-date on the latest issues. (To see videos of Barry Lynn speaking, go to www.keepthemseparate.org and click the links.)
Barry Lynn's presentation is entitled:
“Three 800 Pound Gorillas Enter the Church-State Arena And It's No Joke”
He will emphasize three major church/state issues that are popping up around the country:
1. Illegal political activity by churches
2 Government funding for religious groups with discriminatory hiring practices
3. Businesses with owners claiming religious objection to covering birth control for their employees.
Barry Lynn thinks it may be surprising, but the Obama administration is doing very little to preserve church/state separation in two of these areas and is waffling on the third.
Barry Lynn will be speaking at 7:00 PM on Monday March 11, at the historic Eliot Chapel of the First Unitarian Church, 1011 SW 12th Ave., located between on 12th Ave. between Salmon and Main in downtown Portland. (Doors open at 6:30.)
Parking in the lot right across Salmon Street costs $3 for all evening. Parking on the streets is free beginning at 7:00 PM. Handicapped access is via the “alley” on 12th Street just south of the chapel.
We need help getting the word out about this event. Please take a moment to think about how you can use your contacts and social media to spread the word.
The Columbia Chapter of Americans United is sponsoring this event. It is FREE and open to the public. Please join us and invite your friends.
This event is not to be missed by anyone who is interested in separation of church and state.
I hope to see you there!
