2/10/13: The Humanist Community at Harvard reports: "Unfortunately, all our Darwin Day activities have been postponed indefinitely. We tried everything we could to pull this off in spite of the storm, but it just wasn't practical. We will reschedule as much of the fun as possible, so look for updates on this websiteand in our newsletter." Due to the blizzard and storm aftermath, the cancellation of most public transport in Boston Sunday, and the difficulties everyone would have getting anywhere, the below event is postponed indefinitely:
Humanists, Freethinkers, atheists, skeptics, Naturalists, "None's"-- Join with us and the Humanist Community at Harvard as we get together to celebrate Darwin Day.
GBH/HCH's celebration events will take place SUNDAY FEBRUARY 10 starting at 6 pm in the Harvard Science Center, Hall E. (this is downstairs but there is an elevator). Free parking is available in the Littauer Lot next to the Science Center (see below).
Among the speakers will be cognitive scientists Josh Greene (Harvard), Fiery Cushman (Brown), Catherine Caldwell-Harris (BU), Omar Haque (BU), Peter Blake (Harvard), and Dave Rand (Harvard)! It will be an evening of evolutionary psychology, rational revelry, and skeptical socializing in honour of Charles Darwin!
This year's panel is a follow up to the one HCH hosted last year, revisiting some of the same topics as but also focusing on the evolution of compassion, cooperation, and community, with the special addition of panelist Catherine Caldwell-Harris. How do we study positive, pro-social emotions and how can we develop and cultivate them?
Darwin Day, a holiday around Charles Darwin's birthday of February 12, has been organized by the secular community for many years as 'a celebration of Darwin, Science and Humanity'. The American Humanist Association (of which GBH and HCH are chapters) currently runs a coordinating website at www.darwinday.org
On SUNDAY, FEB 10 there will also be a special family-friendly science workshop before the Science Center event from 4-5 pm at the 12 Eliot Street Harvard Humanist Community Center, as part of the Humanist Learning Lab, HCH's secular Sunday program.
Please see darwinday.org for further activities all over the place!
FREE PARKING in the Littauer Library Lot near the Science Center will be available during the Science Center event: Enter the Science Quadrangle from Oxford St. and follow the road through to its end in the Science Center/Law Library area.
