Tiny House Trailer Discussion

Let's get together and talk about the foundations of a tiny house on wheels--the trailer! Bring your knowledge, resources, questions, and stories to share.

We hope to have a few folks attending who are currently or about to build and can speak to the firsthand experience of what went into their trailer decisions, how they're securing their frame to their trailer, and more!

We'll be meeting in the Cesar Chavez room of the Democracy Center (first room to the right when you walk in). Front door will most likely be locked, but just knock or ring the bell.

Group question: I saw this issue come up on one of the blogs and it might not be a bad idea: Where to build? I've been doing my house in the backyard, and that's a pain in the neck. No actual work shop ( which sucks ), un-level ground ( tough to plum and level ) RAIN, wood storage and other components, etc. Lot's of people don't have a back yard, because they live in the city....In Portland Org. there is a place called ADX, which is similar in concept to the Artisan's Asylum in Somerville....ADX is offering space to build "tiny homes"....although it wouldn't be an ideal fit at the Artisan's Asylum, it would be really cool if we could get a warehouse space ( with a 14ft overhead door ) that we could use as a place to build, work shop, store wood and other supplies, collaborate...just a thought....builing these outside sorta sucks....also: tools!!!!!! Know how! LEVEL, staging, etc....just an idea. Any thoughts?

So, I finished framing the "tiny house" as well as about half the siding. It sits 13 ft above the ground and has 9 windows.
I picked up free, ( craigslist ) 30 windows...old style, which means I had to frame each window "old school"...what a serious pain in the neck.... wouldn't/won't do that again! Also, framing on a trailer which sits outside on un-level ground makes for sorta weird construction...couldn't level or plum anything...LOTS of measuring and diagonals...came out square and plum..but a little odd!..all and all, that was a LOT of work....should have the outside completed by this weekend. Figure a few people may be interested in what I learn along the, good or bad!

OK. No worries. I'm really interested in seeing one in progress. Good luck going forward.

Hey, I have an extra ticket to the Allston food festival today from 12-3 at the Harvard Murr Center, if anyone wants it.

Would anyone mind being a secretary at the meeting? I see RSVPs are closed but I would love to have whatever information comes out of your talk!

Absolutely! We'll make sure someone takes notes, and we'll get them posted to the discussion board afterward!

Finally getting back out to see you guys! Question: who owns the adorable tiny house on a trailer on Highland Ave in Somerville close to Cedar St?

Yep, they own a home goods business called Secret Ships. I met Sara at the Greenway Open Market a couple weeks ago!

Yeah, I tried tracking it down a day or so after Dana spotted it but it seems to have disappeared. That's a cool use for a tiny house, though. I've seen another one built for that purpose with a dutch door that doubles as a counter for customers.

I just joined the group, so missed out on attending this meeting, but would like to know if anyone was thinking of attending the relaxshacksDOTcom workshop in August, or have thoughts on whether this was or was not worth attending. Thanks!

We've got the Democracy Center confirmed; we have one of the smaller rooms, so I've closed RSVPs for now!
