Painting with Light

  • Jun 29, 2013 · 8:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

If you have never painted with light this is the event to come to.  This is going to cover the basics of light painting.  I'll show you the various tools used and how to use them.  Painting uses flashlights as the means to lighting your subject.  It's fun and very easy to create great images.  We'll begin with simple still subjects and move to lighting people.

Plan to meet at the bottom of the pavilion steps at 8:30pm sharp.  We will introduce all the people present so we can put faces to names.  While we wait for the sun to go down I have a few fun surprises planned which are simple and fast to shoot.  These images will will have everyone asking "how did you do that"

Required equipment is your camera, shutter release, tripod and any type of flashlights you have.  You will not be able to hand hold your camera for this shoot.

This Meetup is free to all.

All skill levels are welcome.

Main results is to have fun and learn some creative photography

We also were in the area when I got the cancellation notice. We just went over to Hyde Park and I got some panning practice over at the bike race. :)

Looked at the weather report and it wasn't good. Storms are to continue until 10pm. At this point I have no choice but to cancel this meetup.

Thanks, Bob. I've to drive down from Miamisburg - Dayton. If I start at 7:40, will take a little over an hour, so request you to wait up. :-)

Wow, I don't think I've been receiving any of the notifications on this, so I am glad I double-checked for specifics. One thing I don't think I saw mentioned was recommendations on what kind of lens to bring. Do you suggest a long lens, a wider angle, or does it matter?

Between getting drenched earlier, and another commitment (that my other half made on my behalf) coming up, I will not be able to make it. I hope you all have a wonderful time, and look forward to seeing your pictures. /Jeff

So if I do not have a shutter release, I can not do it?

If your camera has a self timer you can still shoot. The shutter release is to avoid camera shake. Still come and we can find a solution for you to shoot.

I've been playing with my EL wire and Orbs for this event. You will be a fire mak'in' orb creating photographer once you leave this event along with being a light painting geek. This will be fun and plan on making mistakes it's part of the process, you will learn from those mistakes.

I'd love to tell you the lumen value to buy but all of my lights don't have a rating on them since I bought them. I've got powers from 2 million to 10. I suggest you start with one in the middle range. Walmart has a good selection. There is a red and black, Black&Decker, single LED that uses AA batteries that I use most of the time for the type of images we will be doing. Under $15.

Please don't be afraid to come because of the group size. This is a basic how to and then you will break up into groups to shoot and play with the basics you just saw. Bring a flashlight....you will be shooting. After I show the basics I will be walking around to help the small groups. Painting with light is easier than you think. There is nothing or complicated about it. Infact I bet some will say "that's it, are you kidding me".

If you want to experience being master of the light, I suggest you wear dark clothing, black being the best. Master of the light is the person who waves the flashlight for the image being created. Don't worry, if you know how to turn the light on you'll do great.

WooHoo...Looks like we are going to have a good group and lots of fun. Don't forget to bring a flashlight so you can shoot after some instruction...
