Rain Barrel Construction Workshop

This location is shown only to members

Keeping in mind Permaculture Principle #2 to Catch and Store Energy (water being a form of energy) and Permaculture Principle #5 to Use and Value Renewable Resources (like water), we bring you this work day to build our own rain barrels!

After the class that Mary taught on the uses of rain barrels, there was a lot of interest in a meetup to construct our own. In collaboration with NH Coastal Protection Partnership, we are thrilled to have an event where we can do so! We've done some research, and have found places that we can get some bulk prices on materials. We are collecting all the tools needed and will go out and buy the parts once we know numbers needed.

***By partnering with the NH Coastal Protection Partnership and a grant they have, we are able to offer a free rain barrel to the first 10 people who RSVP for this event! (If you would like more than one barrel, each additional barrel will be $35)***

We anticipate the barrels will be an orange "terra cotta" color, similar to the ones pictured here: Molly's Garden Barrels However, because they are recycled barrels, and the types offered change, we can't guarantee what will be there when we go to pick up. It might instead be a blue plastic type. Regardless, all are food grade quality and about 50-60 gallons.

We have estimated the price for each barrel to be $35. In order to make this feasible, we need to have a commitment from you prior to the workshop. Because of this, there is an RSVP deadline of August 16th. We need to get that initial amount from you before the meetup so we can go out and buy all the parts. To be considered fully registered for this event, upon RSVPing, please pay in advance for this workshop ($35 per barrel) via check to : Mary Gilbertson. 3 Benjamin Way, Dover, NH 03820 (In the check memo, please write "rain barrel workshop")

Typically, rain barrels like this cost $75-200... so we are really excited to be able to make them ourselves at more accessible price!

We will be accepting donations to help cover the costs for this event. $10-30 suggested donation.

Even though we've reached our 10 free barrel number, this is still a great deal, so we hope more folks do sign up!

    Soory we'll miss you Virginia.

Folks, if there is enough interest (which it sounds like there is!), we'll look into doing it again.

Do we need to bring anything with us, like other supplies, besides the rain barrel, or tools or anything?

Can I reverse my RSVP? They ran out of barrels at Newmarket before I got there. Has my free barrel been passed along? Thanks.

An extra power drill or two will help speed up the process, as would a few extra 1", 1 1/2", 1 3/4", and 2 1/2" hole saws. Don't feel like you need to run out and buy these if you don't have them around the house!

Also, if anyone has a pop-up tent, just to be assured of some more dry work space, we'd welcome it! I sort of forgot that it rained in NH ever... we do have some area that is under cover, but more might be helpful.
    Thanks!

What a great group of folks and enthusiasm! I'm impressed at how smoothly...and quickly....we built those barrels. Thanks everyone! This is definitely a workshop we'll repeat in the future.

The rain barrels were great, but the extras - the gutter tutorial and the greywater system really put it over the top. Amy, thanks for the tour!

It was well-organized and well-explained. We definitely came away knowing exactly how to make more rain barrels... and it was great that we could bring home the ones we made. Fun time and awesome people too!!
