Natural Goatkeeping Group - let's form one!

Interest in forming a natural goatkeeping club has been expressed, so let's do it!

Does this date work for folks?  We can always try for after the holiday season instead.  But, we'll have a male goat visiting at that time, so thought it could be fun and instructive for people to get to meet him as well while here.

Our goal for this evening would be to gauge interest in the group, come up with ideas for how to proceed with it, decide how often to meet, and where to meet.  I have some ideas to share, and hopefully all of you will bring your ideas as well!

You don't have to have goats to join us, just an interest in learning!  This will be free, open to all.  Let's not have dinner, but feel free to bring snacks to share.  I can put on the fire and the kettle for tea.

Argh ... still interested but need to bill hours to make up for "other stuff" that needed doing this week. My schedule generally is pretty flexible, and I look forward to hearing what you plan!

Hi everyone, it was really awesome meeting you all last night, and I look forward to our next meeting! Amy, do you think you could post the titles and authors of your goatkeeping books? I'd like to look a few of them up and get some reading done so I'm a little more informed the next time we all get together.

These are the ones I had out and personally like best: Natural Goat Care by Pat Coleby; Living with Goats by Margaret Hathaway; Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable by Juliette de Bairacli Levy. The last one is about more than goats, but has a goat section and great info on other animals as well!

Wow...I had no idea what caring for goats entailed. I'm concerned I wont be ready by spring this year. I learned so much and the value of this group is priceless.

Since this wasn't a class and was thus less organized with the info, it might have felt a bit overwhelming / confusing! What I may not have remembered to say is that I was very daunted to get into goats, and it has actually been much easier and more forgiving than I had even hoped. Part of why I've become so enthusiastic about them is that they are quite possible and accessible for part-time homesteader types.

Hi Amy, I am interested in the goat group. I work a 12 hour shift on Wednesdays, the one day of the week I can't do it.

I call Amy "the goat whisperer". I wouldn't miss this for the world! I'd love to have my own someday (next spring?) I've been to visit a couple of times.

Dang-it. I have school on Wednesday nights - but not for long! Goats are on my radar, perhaps after this semester is over I can join in.

Ok! You aren't the only one requesting not a wednesday night, so we'll likely change that.

I am the happy owner of 2 Nubian diary goats and I would love to get connected to others interested in goat-keeping. Weeknights are hard for me, I'm a long distance commuter, but definitely hope to join future events!

Goats are cute, but boy can they be belligerent.

      November 12, 2013

    • Amy A

In our experience they have been quite easy and sweet... never belligerent. But management and personalities can be a topic we discuss for sure.

If it is okay, I will be bringing my daughters along (ages 12 & 11) since they are interested also.

Hi Amy! Would love to join this group but we cannot make this date, so after the holidays sounds great.

Hi Julie, Thanks for the update - we definitely hope that you and Lionel can be part of this, so we look forward to having you there a bit later on...

Hi Everyone - I definitely want to be a part of this group but cannot attend the 13th so please give my spot to someone else.

I have angoras, a sannan and a toggenburg. Love them all! I have been following Pat Colby methodology and found the results to be very inspiring. Had a terrible bout with rot this summer and her copper vitamin mix plus good copper soaks have saved the hooves. Just started clicker training and having lots of fun. Goats are such thinking animals and love to be stimulated with new stuff!

Look forward to meeting everyone at the next gathering.
    Elaine

P.S. I am a BIG tea drinker and am happy to bring along some of my collection to share.

We don't have goats yet but I am very interested in the possibility of adding them to our homestead some day. This sounds like a good group. Thanks.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
