Book Discussion: The Transition Companion by Rob Hopkins

For this second meetup in the series, we agreed to read to the end of the first section, "Starting Out" in Part III, page 140, more or less.

This fall, introducing a book discussion group centered around sustainable community development, planning and transitioning.

The book chosen for this is 'Transition Companion:making your community more resilient in uncertain times' By Rob Hopkins.  The Transition Companion largely replaces the Transition handbook, as it contains the material from the handbook that has been found to work in the field, as well as actual experiences.

Transition Towns (also known as Transition network or Transition Movement) is a grassroots network of communities that are working to build resilience in response to peak oil, climate destruction, and economic instability.  It began as a permaculture design student project overseen by permaculture teacher Rob Hopkins at the Kinsale Further Education College in Ireland.

Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth, says of The Transition Companion: “What Rob Hopkins has done—in this book, and with the Transition movement—simply couldn’t be more important. We’re coming to a powerful crunch time for our civilization, and if you read this you’ll be well ahead of the curve in understanding how to prepare your community. There’s much beauty here, and hope.”

The plan is to do this on the first and third Sunday of the months of the winter, holidays permitting.

Permaculture group members Karen and Laura will co-lead this group.

RiverRun Bookstore in Portsmouth is offering GSPG a 20% discount on the price of the book. This brings their price down to $23.96 a copy. Please remember to mention that you're a GSPG member who's attending the book discussion when you place your order to get that discount. Their contact info is / (603)[masked] / info AT

We will have the donation basket for meetup costs out... we'll suggest $1-5 per meeting.

Great! Very small, as there were only 3 of us, but a good, productive discussion.

Hello. For this meeting we will watch In Transition 2.0 by After viewing the movie, we will wrap up Part One discussions and move on to all of Part Two, the Dare to Dream subsection under Part Three and the Epilogue. Close to the end of this meeting we will then decide as a group if we want to venture into the other four sections of Part Three, or not.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
