Rabbit Husbandry

My Abattoir - the cleanest and easiest way I've found for process my rabbits. Super easy cleanup afterwards.

    Is this for bleeding them and skinning? It's a cool idea. How are you actually dispatching them?

    Im using the "Broomstick" method currently. I used to do it by hand, but a had a few, not so clean kills and I sought a better way. I will be building some "Rabbit Wringer" style killing devices very soon and plan to sell them once I perfect them. This abattoir works nicely, because I save the blood for the compost piles and the offal for the dogs. Before I had to keep separate bins to save each item and this way I cab let it fall were it may and collect it all up at one time.

    Everyone should know that you shouldnt use a "rabbit wringer" on animals over 10 weeks of age. By then their necks are much stronger and if you are not pretty strong you will cause undue suffering. One should never cause undue suffering. I always hit twice with a cat paw or use a .22 cal revolver.

    I agree that no undue suffering should occur, but I do not agree that the wringer can only be used on animals less than 10 weeks old. We very successfully used the wringer here, Sunday, on a 14 week old rabbit, and everyone was amazed with how fast, and smoothly it went. I think the important thing with any butchering, which is what I told the class, is to find the method that you are most comfortable and confident with, because that is the one you will be most successful with. My husband uses the wringer, and has no trouble, even on adult culls, I don't have the upper body strength and feel more comfortable clubbing them. I make a point to butcher when my husband can be with me because I find the rabbits are less stressed with that method. But if I need to do one alone, I club.
