Rush Creek Preserve – Murder in the Marsh & Other Sorts of Fowl Play

Join us for a hike led by Michael Landram in the Marin County Rush Creek Open Space Preserve in Novato.

Trailhead: Between 205 and 215 Saddle Wood Drive in Novato

Route: An approximate 6 mile hike (3 to 4 hours) following Pinheiro Fire Road, Rush Creek Fire Road, Bahia Trail, Bahia Avenue, Bahia Ridge Trail, North Levee Trail, and Pinheiro Fire Road.  For those wanting a shorter hike, there is a loop option available in the beginning for a total distance of about 1.5 miles.  The first half of this hike is almost completely flat adjacent to marsh that is part of the largest remaining natural tidal brackish marsh in California.  We should see plenty of water fowl along the way.  The area also supports a population of blue oak (uncommon in Marin).  After that, the Bahia Ridge trail requires a 270 foot climb for some interesting views of the surrounding area.  An optional 1 mile side trip to the scene of the crime may happen on the way back!

Preserve Map: http://www.marincounty.org/~/media/Images/Departments/PK/Open%20Space/Rush%20Creek/RushCreek033113.pdf

Gear: Bring water, snack, sturdy footwear, and weather appropriate clothing

Weather: Rain does not cancel

See you there!

    Hey all:
I found the newspaper article that lays out the eventual murder, a Native American known as Salvador, who had been previously convicted of another murder:
    http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=73243800

Maybe a continuation of the mystery, both the death notice and the grave stone Michael showed us, lists Rush's death date as June 7; but the event took place on June 1, with the body discovered on June 3.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments! I believe this hike set a record for attendance, was a milestone for visiting all the County Open Space Preserves, and was the most commented on hike of the year. A fabulous community is growing around this in Novato. I thank each and every one of you for making it that way. Cheers! M

Geez, still "only" 34 signed up. Maybe, the phrase "Murder in the Marsh" is being taken to heart. Gotta come up with a prize for hiker number 35 to sign up I guess.

    Bruce,
I love the picture of us-The Green Boot version of "Leaning In" either that or there was something a lot stronger in the water bottle!

It Is a wonder that I ever made it up and down the Mountain in that condition. We seem to always be "holding each other up" on these hikes. Such as Ignacio Hills as well.

      July 26, 2013

  • Court

Bruce, 3rd or 4th from the end's pretty safe. Usually only one or two go missing so not to worry...

    July 25, 2013

    • Bruce

If 1 or 2 go missing, seems to me being number 3 is cutting it a little too close for comfort. Especially when you say usually.
