Green Drinks in July

Every 3rd Thursday, Dandelion Communitea Cafe hosts Green Drinks. Speaking Truth to Power - Part 1 July's featured speakers will be Curtis Michelson, former organizer of the Central Florida Earth Alliance and other local environmental campaigns. Green Drinks is the only place in Orlando where you can eat, drink, enjoy great music and talk and learn about the issues concerning OurLando's community. Way back in 1993, the Central Florida Earth Alliance waged a campaign against the building of a coal-fired plant in Orlando. This was years before CO2 emissions and global warming, and the host of problems associated with coal mining, production and burning, became mainstream concerns. Central Florida has a long history of environmental activism and consciousness. Unfortunately, we have an even longer history of poor environmental stewardship. It is important to be aware of both of these histories and of the embedded institutional resistance that today's environmental campaigns, community organizing efforts, and innovative green businesses may encounter. Curtis Michelson is a relative long-timer of Central Florida. He moved to Orlando in 1991 to direct an environmental campaign advocating for the passage of a recycling bill in the Florida legislature. For 17 years, he has enjoyed 'speaking truth to power' here in Orlando. He has lead and organized campaigns that have challenged institutions as diverse as Orange County, City of Orlando, downtown law firms, the Regional History Center, the City of Ocoee, and not least of all, the Orlando Utilities Commission. Curtis helped form the Central Florida Earth Alliance and led a campaign opposing the buliding of a coal-fired plant by the Orlando Utilities Commission. The lessons he learned in that campaign, and the relationships and friendships he built, effect him to this day. Curtis is a lifelong and third generation Floridian, and a graduate of Florida International University. (Philosophy major, class of '89). Today, for real pay and wages, he creates beautiful and compelling software interfaces. For fun, he rolls on the floor with his kids and tends to an organic garden in the backyard. "I've watched this state be paved over all my life. It's heartbreaking what we've done to 'La Florida', the land of flowers. Generations will curse us."
