Fw: Petition against Progress Energy rate hikes

From: user 6.

Good morning to all !

I'm a new member here at the ' Green Drinks ' - - - I thought that I'd better get in , and reserve my seat before the St.Patrick's day rush - - - ( clever strategy , eh ? )

well -

but on a more serious note , I'm circulating a petition to environmentally minded folks about the proposed Progress Energy rate hikes to pay for the Nuclear Power Plants planned .
( the details are listed below ) -

I think that this is something that we , as Florida taxpayers , and particularly of customers of Progress Energy , and potentially of customers of FPL ( Florida Power and Light ) ought to sit up , and take notice of -

Thank you

Good morning to all -

Progress Energy ( of Central Florida ) recently announced an 11 % rate hike ( to go into effect immediately ) to pay for the construction of 4 new Nuclear Plants in Florida ( 2 in Levy County , and 2 in Turkey Point

( quick note :: FPL - Florida Power and Light is responsible for the Turkey Point project - but , could also do the same thing to fund it's project ) . .

Thus , the Environmental Alliance of North Florida , the Ecology Party of Florida , and the Florida Environmental Community have started a petition , on - line , here -

to oppose the building of these new Plants , and , in particular , the funding of them , - when they have not come up for a public vote , and the construction has not even been approved .

Our united stand against the construction of new Nuclear power plants in Florida is based on the following -

> health hazards for individuals / families living in the vicinity of these Plants have been shown to be at higher risk for diseases such as cancer , diabetes , and other such diseases which effect the immune system , and do damage on a cellular level .

> the exorbitant costs of these plants are well documented , and shown by this rate hike .
Nuclear Plants have never proven to be cost effective , and the cost to build and maintain
them is always passed on to the public.

> We sincerely believe that sustainable energy is a great supplement to existing energy
delivery systems . Advances in such areas as Solar ( where concentrated Solar panels
are capable of providing sufficient megawatts to run large projects ) , and in Sea Water
air conditioning ( S.W.A.C. ) ; and also wind should be looked into as a safer alternative .

> The Nuclear waste disposal system , and probability for an accident , has always proven
to be high . This was proven just within this past month , as inspectors at a Nuclear Plant    in the United Kingdom ( U.K. ) let nuclear waste slip through the inspection system by
failing to look at the sump pumps , which drain excess water out of the system . Thus ,
failure to look at this very basic item allowed nuclear waste to seep into the neighboring
   community .

So -

If you so desire , let us send Progress Energy a message -

If nothing else , at least to stop and look at what they are doing , and to give the public a say in a situation that will most definitely effect our finances , and our health .

There is also a printable version of the petition located at the Ecology Party homepage -

if you wish to sign the petition in this manner . You will have to print this out , then mail it to
the Environmental Alliance of North Florida -

but , either way -

let's send Progress Energy a mesage to consider the needs of the community in their plans .

Thank you
