Creating an Herbal Apothecary: 6-Class Series in North Hollywood!

Class dates: July 20, August 3, August 24, September 7, September 14 OR 28 (TBD), October 5

This class series is devoted to the art and science of medicine-making. In the course of this series, students will become adept at making and using all of the most common herbal medicines, and understand the benefits and drawbacks of each.

At the end of the course, students will have created an extensive apothecary of herbal medicines, and will gain the ability to create many more. We will make medicines for each class, you'll have the opportunity to try many variations, you will take home samples, and recipes to create them at home.

Classes for this series:

1. The Universal Solvent: Water Infusions. Water extracts of herbs as teas, baths, compresses, washes. Formulation of tea blends.

2. The Joy of Tinctures (Plus the slightly lesser, but occasionally necessary, Joy of Glycerites). Making of clinical strength tinctures and glycerites.

3. Food-Based Solvents: Vinegar and Honey extractions, together and separately. Making of honey herb syrups, acetums, oxymels and other archaic and lovely medicines.

4. The Art of Elixirs: Letting go of the science-based method of tincture making and embracing the wild and exceptionally fine method of blending delicious medicinal elixirs.

5. Feeding The Skin: Making infused oils, salves, and creams.

6. Kitchen Medicine: Herbs as healing foods. Sampling of many delicious healing foods, recipes for use of common herbs and spices from the pantry and farmer's market.

Requires payment to RSVP, or prior arrangement with me.

Course fee of $100 for the full series of 6 classes (a discount of $20 from the usual class fee!)

This class has been a wealth of information valuable to the beginner or seasoned herbalist. Learning about plants, constituents and applicable methods you can really use, you will leave with a very working knowledge on creating many supportive solutions!

Did you set up a facebook group for the class yet? Just wondered... I haven't heard anything.

BTW, I vote for September 28 for the class that is TBD. The 14th it's Yom Kippur and that I can't escape :( :) :) :) Just in case you are taking votes!

Julie, where are some good places in or near Long Beach to buy the herbs you covered in class? I especially would love to make the tea you demo'ed!

I need a ride! I'm in Westwood but happy to go to you if it means not having to go all the way to North Hollywood in a bus :p If you go by the 95 I can wait near the Wilshire exit :)

Uy, I'm sorry. That one. This US highways thing from the East coast to the West coast is melting my brain.

REALLY want to take this course. You are a great teacher. I think the price is very reasonable. Is there anyway to make up missed classes? (I'll be in NY for a couple weeks, missing session #3.)

Carrie, you'd have access to the class notes and the online discussion group (which the Lakewood group LOVED having available, and is still going strong after we've finished the course). You could pick up the missed class at another time, as well.

Is it necessary to take each class? Tight budget these days.
    Thanks!

Hi Jessica- all of these classes are made available individually throughout the year, I'm just offering them in a course format to allow those who want to attend all of them to save some money (you're paying the price of 5 classes for a 6 class course) and see the process of medicine making in a larger context, which you can only best get in a format like this.
I totally understand about the budget, which is why a) I make this reduced price series available, and b) I make single classes available, and c) I make the donation-based study group gatherings available. Hopefully one of those will work for you!
