A Toast to Your Influence: How Conscientious Consumers Change Business

On Friday, March 23rd, GreenspaceNYC and Ethikus are teaming up to host a lively discussion on the role of the ethical consumer. The event will take place from 6:30-9:00 pm at the free co-working space, Wix Lounge, located just two blocks from Union Square in Manhattan. The night will act as an informative conversation, with presentations by Ethikus founder and former IBM Corporate Social Responsibility consulting leader Jeff Hittner, Laura Scherling and Laurence Wilse-Samson of GreenspaceNYC, a social media platform which aims to advertise local sustainability-themed initiatives and develop public programming at free or little cost for New Yorkers who want to see change in their city.

The evening will be interactive, informative and delicious with sustainable treats being served. There will also be drinks and intoxicating music by DJ Jan Woo of the Brooklyn based lifestyle collective, Body Actualized.

Ethikus founder Jeff Hittner will discuss how modern technology can insert consumer values more prominently into the considerations of the way big and small companies do business. Posing the question, are consumers the new brand managers? He will also introduce, Shop Your Value’s Week, the premier celebration of local businesses in NYC that take sustainability seriously in their business plans.

On March 23rd at the Wix Lounge we will discuss this initiative and whether and how it might be possible to transform ‘business as usual’ into ‘business as good!’

The event will be an educational as well as network building Meet-up. Come for a chance to sample some of the best local and sustainably minded businesses in NYC, starting off the event with organic and local hors-d’oeuvres from Greensquare Tavern and tasty Brooklyn Brewery beers, we will wrap up with all-natural cupcakes from Jessy Cupcake Company and exclusive organic libations from Greenbar, sponsored by Eco-Bartender Kyle Bullen. Post-discussion music courtesy DJ Jan Woo.

The GreenspaceNYC team (lead by Laura Scherling and Jeff Kasper) develop, host, and curate Pop-up events, classes, and workshops about sustainability that run the gamut from art-making & sustainable architecture to food studies & urban agriculture. GreenspaceNYC aims to offer educational events to highlight and build a network of participants interested in sharing information on sustainable practices to the public at free or very little cost. GreenspaceNYC hopes that participants take the information, skills and resources obtained from their online platform and physical events, and start their own projects - even on a small scale to improve their city.

Thank you so much for attending our event last week. We hope you had fun, enjoyed the talk and generous food and alcohol donations from our sponsors. It was our first time showcasing the topic of ethical consumerism and we hope it offered some insight into the matter. We look forward to seeing you at our future events! Our events will continue to be free and run by volunteers who hope to democratize information and spread green education.
