Greenwich Screenwriters

Hello Everyone,

At the last meeting  we talked about reading full length scripts and agreed this would be useful and interesting for the writer. We also agreed it would be good to have actors for full scripts. Please post comments if anyone has any thoughts on this.

"the garden fence" is next month's short film challenge - make of it what you will.(up to 5 pages).

Just to let people know,,,I've lost access to the greenwichscreenwriters email, temporarily, I hope. Apologies to anyone who's sent an email in the last few weeks and not received a response. I hope it will be sorted out soon.

Denise

Unfortunately five of us turned up - to find the meeting had been cancelled at the last minute. No big deal as we had a great chat and I got Robert Grant to sign his book - Writing the Science Fiction Film. Highly recommended - order it from Amazon - easily the best screenwriting guide I have read since Saving the Cat.
As these meeting are only very loosely chaired and as we only meet once a month - why cancel? Why not have a system, where the meeting automatically takes place and the group elects a chair for the evening if the normal chair cannot make it?? Any body who cannot make it at the last moment - simply sends in an apology!
One problem - the scrabble club was booked into the dining area that evening. It seems the pub manager likes to be asked - if we want to use the back room.

Yeah, I didn't go because it was cancelled, I just assumed no one would go, but now I'm gutted I didn't make it. I like the idea of not cancelling and going anyway, we should do that.

Have uploaded a 12 page short (ignore the storyboards attached!) I won't be able to get it printed so this is only if there is time/people have enough digital devices to hand.

Peter, will you upload your pages for us to read beforehand or you'll bring copies on the day

Hello Peter - 20 pages is fine and, no Vaskaf, there's no cost for the meeting. There is a cost for the upstairs room though, so we need to decide whether people are willing to make a contribution if we want to use the upstairs room. We'll be in the conservatory as usual.

Looking forward to next week's meeting...

Thanks for confirming Denise. I don't mind contributing so long as it's reasonable. I'm trialling another meet up group and they take £3 per person. Look forward to next weeks meet up too.

Hi Denise, may I just confirm there's no charge for the class and what work are we reading this week?

    Hi Denise
Are any of the people in the group actual screenwriters who have had scripts turned into commercially sold films or videos, or is this just a group for people who would like to get into film/TV/internet broadcasting?

I've been optioned and had a few shorts produced, and there are guys like Darren that are working screenwriters, that is, they make their living writing screenplays, but they are few and far between. The sad fact is that the folk making a living at this don't tend to join meetup groups as they've moved on from this 'level' of screenwriting.

Yep - I'm semi professional in that I have had one film made - google Algiers Murders film starring John Savage and have a new film about to go into production in August. I have a third film optioned for production next year. The problem is that I can't make a living out of it. In my opinion, for what it's worth - you guys should be looking at developing beat sheets and reading say the first 30 pages of a screenplay - and then engage in positive deconstruction. The group I saw in June is essentially a creative writing nurture group. The emphasis should be on stories not dialogue. A producer does not give a damn about your dialogue until you have sold him 'The Story'. 30 pages means you can have a number of screenplays read and then choose one or two to profile for a full read.
